Driving from Indy to Chicago, where to eat?

we%26#39;ll be driving with kids from Indy to Chicago (I-65) and are looking for some good family friendly restaurants along the way. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Driving from Indy to Chicago, where to eat?

I%26#39;m not sure if this route takes you through Valparaiso, IN, but if it does, there are 2 restaurants that are really good. One is called Strongbow Inn. They have a restaurant and bakery right on U.S. 30. They raise their own turkeys and have great food (they have more than just turkey, too) and a buffet on Wednesday nights and a brunch on Sunday - really, really good.

The other is called Kelseys - also on U.S. 30, that is a great steakhouse. So depending on what you like, there are two of my favorites.

Driving from Indy to Chicago, where to eat?

If you like Greek restaurants, try %26#39;The Wheel%26#39; restaurant in Hammond, IN. It is located right off the Indianapolis Blvd interchange and I-80/94. It is easy to get off the highway and get right back on since it is only about 1000 feet from the highway. The restaurant is clean and the food is good. The service is pretty good also.

My best recommendation to you is to exit off of US 30 in Merrillville (Exit 255 I believe). There are TONS of good places to eat right off the interchange. Once you pass US 30 going north, there is very little until you reach Chicago. Most of the exits are in Gary, which is not a great place to be as an out-of-towner. If you go west on US 30 to US 41 (about 8 miles) and head north on US 41, there is a ton of stuff there also. You will pass all the major chain restaurants. To continue to Chicago, head north about 7 miles to I-80/94 and continue westbound following the Chicago signs. US 30 is a 4-lane divided highway that is easy to drive. US 41 is a 4-lane highway with a bit more traffic, but still worth the detour.

Honestly...the area between US 30 on I-65 all the way to Chicago is a %26#39;dead area%26#39;. Not only are there no good restaurants, there are no restaurants PERIOD! Taking that alternate route will also detour you around all the major construction that will likely delay your trip 30-45 minutes. The I-65 and I-80/94 interchange is all torn up and backups are long.

Thank you so much for the suggestions!!! We did see the construction warning in our AAA TripTik, thanks for reinforcing it.

We have stopped at Fair Oaks Farms, which is between Indy and Merrillville. They have great sandwiches and you can tour the farm, although we%26#39;ve never done that. Awesome cheeses and ice cream, too!

People in the ';region'; call the wheel a Greek restaurant, but it doesn%26#39;t serve much authentic Greek food. They have a menu where you can get most anything and the quality is so so. I work in that area and avoid it since there is a lot of smoking there.

But, if you are willing to patronize a Cracker Barrel, there is one at Kennedy Avenue (exit 3 on 80/94) southbound. On Indianapolis Blvd (exit 2 on 80/94) there is an excellent authentic inexpensive Chinese restaurant. It is on the east side of the street almost immediately after you exit. It is a small family run restaurant.

I think the recommendation to stop at the Dairy farm is probably the most interesting.

This isn%26#39;t along the way, but once you arrive in Chicago you might want to stop at Ed Debevic%26#39;s which is located at the corner of Wells %26amp; Ontario north of the River. Nostalgic 50s/60s diner with food from the era as well. The servers come with an ';attitude'; and even dance on the counter for the benefit of customers.

Ibeplate,

Noticed in your post the mention of the AAA Trip Tik. Curious as to how you like the new onces compared with the earlier strip maps provided by AAA? Personally I don%26#39;t think they are as good because they don%26#39;t show as much detail as the others. Just curious.

Indianapolis Indians tickets

I%26#39;m going to be in Indianapolis on Friday en route to St. Louis. It%26#39;s looking now like I might be able to get there earlier than I%26#39;d planned, and I%26#39;m contemplating going to the baseball game that evening, but I won%26#39;t know for sure until Friday if I%26#39;ll be there in time to go to the game. Is it generally easy to get walk-up tickets, or am I out of luck if I don%26#39;t buy in advance. I know it%26#39;s the last weekend of the season and they%26#39;re having fireworks after the game, so more people may turn out.

Indianapolis Indians tickets

Hello Swords,

Ah, a fan of the old AHL team. I go back to the days when Cincinnati fielded the ';hated'; Cincy Mohawks in the IHL. There was quite a rivalry with the Indpls Chiefs and Cincy was so strong. That%26#39;s another story!

I called the Indians office this morning %26amp; they said tickets are still available for the Friday night game. They are having their own fireworks display after the game %26amp; it%26#39;s also Marvel Comic Book Night. The Saturday game they are allowing fans to remain for the Downtown Sky Concert co-sponsored by a local radio station which will air the music while fireworks fill the night sky. They are also raffling off 30 game worn jerseys from players/coaches since it%26#39;s the season finale. If you want a seat, you probably should call the team and reserve seats. However, they also offer lawn seating in the outfield so bring a blanket %26amp; watch the game from beyond the outfield fence!

You can park in the White River Park lot west of the stadium or a better choice may be the Indiana State parking garage at the corner of Washington %26amp; West Streets.

Indianapolis Indians tickets

I recommend going to the game and enjoying the evening at the ballpark. Tickets should be no problem for one. Is that correct? It is a great place to watch a baseball game. Tickets range from the $13 to $8. Check out Indyindians.com for more information.

Romantic Things to Do for Anniversary Trip!

My wife and I will be in Indianapolis from August 29th - September 2nd for a long weekend to celebrate our 1st Anniversary! We have never been to Indy so we would like as much input as possible to make this trip special and memorable for both of us. We would love great ideas and options on romantic things to do, see, and places to eat as well. We are staying at the Westin and have booked a couples massage so far. We want to soak up Indy and enjoy it as much as possible while we%26#39;re there. Any must-see attractions, restaurants, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks again!

Romantic Things to Do for Anniversary Trip!

You might consider taking an evening horse-drawn carriage ride around downtown. You will see the carriages out every evening, starting around 6:00, so they won%26#39;t be hard to find.

Romantic Things to Do for Anniversary Trip!

Most of the nicer hotels in town (Canterbury, Conrad, Westin, etc.) have ';romance'; packages. Check their websites.

Go to the zoo and gardens: http://www.indyzoo.com/

The Indians play at home the 29 and the 30. The stadium is right near the zoo.

I%26#39;d enjoy as much time outside as possible.

Check out www.indy.org for more ideas.

You can take a gondola boat ride down the canal like they do in Venice. If you%26#39;re lucky you%26#39;ll get a good singer. They can be rented by the State Office Building. You can surprise your wife with a personalized menu at McCormiks and Schmick%26#39;s, they are in the Hilton at Market and Illinois. If you call early they will do this for you. Downtown Indy is pretty mcuh completely walkable. What particular interests do you have? How did you pick indy?

Walk along the Canal Walk downtown. On the weekends there is a gondola rides outfitter on the canal, or you can rent paddleboats/kayaks for a little water fun. There are a number of museums in Indy, if you enjoy that sort of thing. The grounds at the Indianapolis Museum of Art are lovely (and the museum entrance is free), that is just north of the downtown area. A number of state parks (about an hour or so away from Indy) have good hiking trails (Shades, Turkey Run, Brown County). You can take an elevator to the top of Monument Circle downtown for some nice views (not sure about hours of operation, but they might be open in the evening).

As far as restaurants, I have heard the Eagle%26#39;s Nest at the top of the Hyatt is nice (it%26#39;s a revolving restaurant), in terms of romantic spots. The restaurant at the Canterbury might be good. For steaks, Ruth%26#39;s Chris and St. Elmos are right downtown, too.

Enjoy yourselves, whatever you choose!

I agree with the horse drawn carriage ride after dinner. Romantic could mean expensive or not so expensive. There are many to choose from downtown. Can%26#39;t go wrong with any of the steak house establishments downtown all are excellent. There are also some very good Italian restaurants which could also fit the bill as romantic. The gondola ride and canal walk at dusk or in the evening would be romantic. The zoo is a nice attraction , along with the Indianapolis Indians baseball games are fun. definately will be able to walk to most anywhere you desire to go downtown. Enjoy!

There are some very good restaurants in and near the downtown area.

The Capital Grille in the Conrad is probably the best steakhouse and restaurant in the city right now.

thecapitalgrille.com/Locations/…

Agio on Massachusetts Avenue is excellent. Mass Ave is very near the downtown area

http://www.agiorestaurant.net/

Other favorites:

Palamino

www.palomino.com/index.php…

Dunaways

http://www.dunaways.com/

The restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel downtown is wonderful, small and intimate (romantic)

www.canterburyhotel.com/go/restaurant.html

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is very good and the grounds are beautiful. There is a Wolfgang Puck restaurant there.

wolfgangpuck.com/restaurants/…

Some of the other excellent non-chain restaurants downtown (in addition to Agio and Dunaways already mentioned) are:

Scholars Inn (just up Mass. Avenue from Agio - classic American fine cuisine - a very nice restaurant)

St. Elmo%26#39;s and Harry %26amp; Izzy%26#39;s (sibling restaurants - St. Elmo%26#39;s is Indy%26#39;s original ';classic'; steakhouse; I%26#39;m not a fan, but it is legendary and has a huge legion of aficionado%26#39;s)

There is a GREAT bar inside the Atheneum at Mass. Ave. and Michigan Ave. (I think ...) - a classic bavarian type bar with a great selection of european beers and local brews. The German food in the restaurant is just so-so; but the bar is a great place to go when you want to down a few non-lite beers and have a nice conversation (over a fairly loud room ...).

You could travel just a few miles north to Broad Ripple and have a great meal at any one of a number of restaurants (our favorite, by far: Ambrosia - a hugely rejuvenated Italian restaurant), and then stroll up and down the main drag and the by-streets - picking and choosing the pubs/niteclubs to visit. There is a relatively new and very good Belgian restaurant there too - Bruges - sp? - excellent steak frites, mussels, and much more.

Hope you have a great 1st anniversary!

Without question you should check out the Canal Area as it truly should not be missed.

My favorite restaurant for romance is and always will be The Eagles Nest at the top of the Hyatt Regency. It is a revolving restaurant with amazing food and service. The menu changes regularly and if you need to check the prices just go to the Hyatt website. It%26#39;s an amazing view and sooo quiet and intimate. Plan on at least $60 pp minimum.

A freebie that we love is to walk the gorgeous gardens of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Very serene, and very popular with couples just looking to while away the time. Lots of cozy little seating areas for two! We always park back by the Greenhouse.

Happy 1st Anniversary to you both!

Went to Rib America tonight with the family for dinner. Tried out Chicago BBQ company. not good. Had the 3 rib bone and chicken dinner only got two rib bones. Did not have good flavor at all. Wife tried Buddy%26#39;s BBQ which she loved. Also tried a bloomin onion which was average. $10 gets you seven tickets which are used at the vendor tents. Daughter won a giant Alvin the Chipmunk which was amazing for her to win. She was focused on the prize all while we were eating dinner. After 1pm the next three days admission is $5 to cover for the live music. For more information check out ribamerica.com.

rib america and free concerts this weekend

Wife and I are planning on going tonight to see Dennis DeYoung. We probably won%26#39;t eat there because it is so expensive and the food isn%26#39;t that great usually. Might go back Monday to see .38 Special.

  • Finally have tickets to ND game versus Purdue-HELP

Coming for the weekend of Sept. 26th to the 28th.

Have been checking hotels. Some are booked and some are just outrageously priced. I understand that is what happens when ND plays. We are thinking of staying in Valparaiso. So, anyone know how long the drive would be from there and where to park? We are coming from KY.

    Thanks so much.

Finally have tickets to ND game versus Purdue-HELP

You would be closer to South Bend if you stay in Laporte Indiana. Valparaiso is about 24 miles west of Laporte. Laporte is closer to South Bend and the 80/90 toll road. Hotels in the Laporte area are:

    Best Value Inn %26amp; Suites (219) 362-4585

The Blue Heron Inn (219) 362-5077

    Hampton Inn (219) 362 - 6100

    Super 8 motel (219) 325-3808

there is also a Holiday Inn Express (don%26#39;t know the phone number)

Arbor Hill Inn %26amp; Guest house (219) 362-9200

all of the above hotels are close to the 80/90 toll road to South Bend.

    Hope this helps

Finally have tickets to ND game versus Purdue-HELP

Thanks for all the hotel suggestions. I will check out that area.

Just wondering if parking is a problem at the stadium?

If you are coming from the toll-road there are sign boards directing you to the general parking area. If you are coming up US31 it becomes SR933 just south of South Bend turn East(right) on Cleveland Road. At first traffic light (Juniper Road) turn right again and you will run right into general parking. General admission parking opens at 8am.

Thanks so much for the parking directions.

    Exactly what we needed.

Still researching hotels. Might come up 31 and was thinking of Plymouth???

Thanks so much for everyone%26#39;s response.

Finally found a hotel in Goshen. I had heard it was hard to find hotels in the area when ND played at home. But, had no idea it was that crazy.

If you are still looking, look north of South Bend in Michigan. There are some nice little towns in that part of Michigan. You maybe could even stay over on the lake and drive in for the game.

any idea what the towns are in michigan to stay on the lake?

Here is an article from this morning%26#39;s Chicago Tribune that talks about all the towns and activities in that pocket of Michigan

    chicagotribune.com/travel/…

Look at New Buffalo, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Saugatuck, Douglas, Sawyer, and even Niles.

Thanks for your help. We did book a hotel in Goshen.

No nothing about the area. But, seems like it is 25-30 miles from ND stadium. We thought we would go up Friday afternoon and spend that night and then get up early and head into South Bend and park early so as not to be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.

Does that sound logical? That way we can maybe walk about the campus since we have heard how awesome it is. Any suggestions as to what to do on Friday night or where to eat or drink?

    Harrahs Horseshoe Casino

Just visited briefly, found the staff to be very nice and helpful. Casino was clean and bright and enjoyed the variety of slots. Cocktails were reasonably priced. Would have liked to stay at a hotel but there were very few to choose from in the area. Would like to return again.

    Hotel for Indianapolis Marathon (Fall)

I am looking for recommendations for a hotel near the Sterrett Center for the Indianapolis Marathon in October. My main concerns are that it is clean, comfortable, convenient and reasonably priced.

    Thanks!

    Hotel for Indianapolis Marathon (Fall)

Would the Sterrett center be on one of the college campus in town. Either University of Indianapolis or Butler University? Or Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis? Just wondering to be able to help.

    Hotel for Indianapolis Marathon (Fall)

Wow the Marathon%26#39;s website sure wasn%26#39;t much help was it? Talk about your dead links.

Anyway if I were you I would stay at the Comfort Inn %26amp; suites located at 5755 N. German Church Road. It%26#39;s brand spanking new (open a year or so) and only about 2 miles from the Sterrett. Very easy to get to. Just google it. In a very good area that been revamped over the last couple years.

The hotel actually sits in an outlot of the WalMart parking lot there. Eateries available at the location are: A%26amp;W combo restaurant with KFC, Applebee%26#39;s, Dairy Queen, Rally%26#39;s,Starbucks, and several pizza places. On your way to Sterrett from there you%26#39;ll pass an International House of Pancakes on 56th Street just east of Post Road.

Fort Harrison is a gorgeous place but the neighborhoods surrounding it are pretty rough. the location of theis hotel is in an area that has experienced a lot of commercial growth so it has been wonderfully improved. Nice area to stay with everything you could need.

    Good luck in the marathon!

Forgot to add that since I don%26#39;t know what direction you%26#39;re heading in from - Pendleton Pike (aka St. Rd 67) is the main drag through this area and has been under construction for about 3 years now. The main area of construction at this point is around I-465 but it will run east just a bit, so some patience will be required if you get there around rush hour at all. It%26#39;s not at all bad but I wanted you to be prepared for it. I always like knowing about road construction.

Thank you for your help! I will be coming from Dayton Ohio. I am really not familiar with the city but I think the marathon site mentioned 56th and Post as a reference point to the start area - not sure if this is on or near either campus?!?!

I really appreciate the advice about the surrounding neighborhoods and I will definately check out the comfort inn! Thanks again!

I second the Comfort Inn. Also do not go south of 56th street where the area is not very nice. Anywhere north of 56th street is OK. I believe there is an Inn at the Fort Harrison State Park which is right there at 56 %26amp; Post. That area used to be the Army base that was closed in the 90%26#39;s. Now they are building houses and commercial building revitalizing the area. Just north of 56th is the Castleton area lots of shopping restaurants and hotels. 82nd and Allisonville area. Hope this helps.

The Sterrett Center is located in the Ft. Harrison complex at 8950 Otis Avenue in Lawrence. Several places that are close to the area are listed here:

Super 8 Motel 3.8 miles from Sterrett Ctr

    7202 E. 82nd St. $59-89 rate

    Suburban Extended Stay 3.8 miles

    8055 Bash St. $62-79 rate

Both of these are in the Castleton area which puts you near Castleton Square Shopping Center where you%26#39;ll have lots of eating choices either in the Mall itself or along 82nd St.

    Breweries/Pubs

We are traveling to West Lafayette, IN and South Bend. I was wondering if there are any near or on our way from W. Lafayette to S. Bend.

    Breweries/Pubs

Mishawaka Brewing company in Mishawaka is a nice pub that makes their own beer. http://www.mishawakabrewingcompany.com/

Also Fiddler%26#39;s Hearth in downtown South Bend is a great Irish pub. See http://www.fiddlershearth.com/

    Enjoy!

    Breweries/Pubs

We did go to fiddlers hearth which was a fun small place to dine. We stayed for the open mic with various music played by many guitarist on Thursday evening.

There were many different brews to choose from their list.

    Take Out Ribs

Michigan City can be a rough place to find something to eat... but there is a teeny little take out place on 12/20 that was pretty good. Frosty%26#39;s Cajun Barbeque (on 12/20 just up the road from Karwick Plaza). Cash only, will likely not make it just because of its location(it can be a bit like Brigadoon, it seems to come and go). Ribs were good, not too fatty, well smoked. Good luck.

  • Help! FIrst time coming..need lots of input

I am thinking of coming to Notre Dame from NJ the 25-28 of September for the football game. Here are my questions. If anyone could help I would deeply appreciate it.

    1. Can I fly into a different airport other than the South Bend? Is there anything in close distance? I can get into Chicago for 250, but don%26#39;t know how far that is. (The South Bend flight will be 500 each right now!)

    2. What about a train? Any suggestions?

    3. How far are you from Chicago or even Lake Michigan? I am thinking of spending a day or two there as well. Is there anything touristy that I should plan to see in this area?

    4. Finally, Is it silly to look at a hotel in between South Bend and Chicago? I was thinking it might be cheaper and allow me to see both South Bend and Chicago.

Thank you for all of the help. I am totally lost when it comes to the area so any help will be greatly apprectiated. Thanks!

Help! FIrst time coming..need lots of input

CHicago O%26#39;hare or Midway are other options. As far as getting to South Bend you have either rental car, Coach USA(bus) or the South Shore railroad.

Hotel rooms are not cheap on football weekends and you may have trouble finding availability for some games unless you travel farther away from South Bend.

Help! FIrst time coming..need lots of input

You could take the Amtrak train from New Jersey to South Bend, Indiana.

I would suggest flying into Midway airport in Chicago. Midway is a Southwest airlines hub, so, the flight cost is reasonable. I would rent a car. Car rental is very reasonable (check out priceline). Midway is about 2 hours from Southbend an is right outside of downtown Chicago. You could then stay downtown Chicago (there are a ton of things to do in Chicago) or drive and stay in the Valparaiso/Chesterton area of Indiana your first night. Valparaiso/Chesterton are right on your way to South Bend about an hour from Chicago and an hour from South Bend. I would definately check out the Indiana Dunes state park (right on beach/great hiking trails) which you could do easily if staying in Valpo/Chesterton as it is right off the interstate.

If you are looking for cheaper lodging the night of the game, look at staying right off the interstate in LaPorte, Indiana or again, in Chesterton, Indiana. LaPorte is about 1/2 hour from Southbend. Feel free to ask whatever questions you have......I like here so I am very familiar with things.

Going to Indy for the first time, what to see?

I am actually going to Indianapolis for a trade show and staying in the Indianapolis Convention Center. As i will be there for 3 days and never have been, i would like to see a couple of places.

Is there anything nice to do around the Indinapolis Convention Center?

Is it safe, as i will be there by myself?

Any suggestions will be great. I will probably be doing things after 6pm, so please take that into consideration.

    Thanks,

    Playa

Going to Indy for the first time, what to see?

    First off, yes, it%26#39;s safe.

    After 6, eh?

I notice you%26#39;re from Boston - if you%26#39;re a baseball fan and the weather is pleasant, you might enjoy taking in the AAA Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field right next to the convention center. It%26#39;s not the Sox - but it%26#39;s terrific baseball in a very nice ballpark. There also might be a concert at the White River State Park. There%26#39;s an IMAX theater about 4 blocks from the convention center that might be showing something of interest.

There are a number of night clubs in town - and some great bars (with and without music). The Slippery Noodle on the very near south side - about 3 blocks from the convention center - has good pub food and typically has good bands playing after about 8 or 9. The Chatterbox is in the Mass. Avenue district - a tiny place that%26#39;s seen the likes of the Stones, Wynford Marsalis and his band (several times), and regularly features some of the best jazz in the midwest.

I%26#39;m sure others will chime in with other stuff ...

Going to Indy for the first time, what to see?

Thanks Dave, by the way, I do like baseball but i am not from Boston even though it is my current city of residence, i am from NYC.

I usually like sight seeyng, but guess i am out of luck with the times of the convention. What times are museums open till.

I might have some time the first day i get there, since i am only setting up, but don%26#39;t know how much time.

    Thanks,

    Playa

IT is certainly safe downtown. Everything is within walking distance to and from all points of interest. The Circle Centre mall has plenty of shopping and dining to chose from. Downtown has a multitude of restaurants to chose from also. Being from New York I%26#39;m sure you know how to handle yourself to be safe after dark. Just use your head and some common sense. Check out indy.com for more information regarding the downtown area. I second the suggestion of the Slippery Noodle great bar and food. Cover charge after 7pm. Great live blues the best around every night. Visitors come from all around. Oldest bar in Indiana lots of history. Enjoy!!

Everyone had good suggestions... I%26#39;ll add a few myself.

I would take a walk along the canal. Great exercise and good people watching. It%26#39;s always busy before dusk, which is about 8:30pm now, so you%26#39;ll be safe. The zoo and museums are along the canal (Eitljorg, Indiana State Museum, Indiana History Center) but all close relatively early (I think around 5pm.)

When are you coming? There are evening events on the canal (music by the History Center Thursday nts) and at the zoo (art show on Aug 28) in the summer. There%26#39;s also a nice local restaurant at the northern end of the canal, Buggs Temple. Worth the walk.

There are also plenty of spas within a few blocks of the convention center. Closest are on Monument Circle (Studio 2000) and one at the Conrad Hotel. It%26#39;d be nice after a long day at a convention.

I suggest breakfast or lunch at ';Patachou on the Park';. Excellent local restaurant - organic and local foods. It%26#39;s located at the Simon building very close to the convention center. Unfortunately they are only open for breakfast/lunch.

I live downtown, and walk around with my toddler son quite often during the day. Perfectly safe. At night, I%26#39;d use caution and stay on the busier sidewalks (Meridian, Washington, Illinois.)

    Enjoy!

Thank you all for all the suggestions, I really appreciated. Too bad i won%26#39;t be able to enjoy any of the museums, maybe this makes it so i%26#39;ll try it out on my on at another time.

I will be ther August 3-6, so not much.

    Again thanks,

    Playa

The Eiteljorg Museum is very close to the Convention Center, hours are only 10-5 Mon-Sat and noon-5 on Sundays, but it might be doable if you have a break in your meetings.

    http://www.eiteljorg.org/

    Dear Playa20,

I concur that Indy is a very safe city. I cannot imagine that you will not be prepared for anything that you will encounter here.

Yes, the Whiteriver State Park area, (most of the downtown museums) close early, but I suggest you check out the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It is a hidden gem. One of the best Impressionist collections in the country. Also, there is currently an exhibit of the original transcript/scroll of ';On The Road'; by Jack Kerouac.

For food, I recommend either R Bistro or Elements. Both places focus on local food. Both are non-chain, which is a rarity here. I do agree that Patachou is a great place for breakfast or for lunch. There are a number of branches in Indy, but it is only Indy, so it%26#39;s still local.

I hope you enjoy your trip here.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. My co-worker lives close to Indy and he will give me a few pointers. I might get to do one Museum the day i get there since it won%26#39;t be a full day.

Again, you guys are very kind to take the time to response.

BTW i%26#39;ll be staying at the Hampton hotel in downtown.I read the reviews and they are good, so happy about that choice, even though it was not mine.

Thanks, I will come back and let you know what i think of your city.

    Playa

Hey guys i am staying at the University Place Hotel.

I did not have time to get a manicure.

If there a manicure place around here with reasonable prices?

    Thanks,

    Playa

Not sure what is ';reasonable';. There%26#39;s a place in the Embassy Suites downtown (actually between Embassy Suites and TJ Maxx on the second level) that specializes in manicures. Or you could try one of the spas I mentioned in my previous post. Too bad you aren%26#39;t at the Hampton. But there is a good shuttle from your hotel to downtown, as I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ve used it.

I know it is brand new, but does anyone have parking suggestions for Lucas Oil Stadium on September 7? We%26#39;ll be coming and going from the south (Interstate 65). I%26#39;d like to stay out of a garage if possible.

    Parking for Lucas Oil Stadium

There are about 1500 spots south of the stadium but it is important to know that they are ALL reserved spots so don%26#39;t attempt to park there. The main surface lots for the publics%26#39; use are located on South Street near the intersections of Meridian Street and Pennsylvania Street.

Arrive very early and drive around. The closest public parking available at the stadium will cost you $45. At least that%26#39;s what I%26#39;ve seen.

    Parking for Lucas Oil Stadium

I second the - ';get here early and drive around';. All metered parking on the streets of downtown are free on weekends (after 6pm on Friday through early Monday morning.) Street parking close to the stadium will be blocked off to help with traffic flow, so don%26#39;t even bother trying to get close to the stadium.

I suggest getting off I-65 at the Market Street Exit (WEST.) If you are willing to walk about 1/2 mile, you can park along the street where ever there is open parking. You%26#39;ll be heading toward downtown. You want to stay on or south of Market St.

There are also some lots by Eli Lilly and the Anthem buildings off of South St. and East St. To get there, again go West on Market and turn left on the second stoplight (East St.) Turn left and the second stoplight is South St. Turn right. Lots will be on left and right. Good luck!

I would try to park like Tina said. I lke to park on New York Street around Capitol. It%26#39;s probably about a 3/4 mile walk to Lucas Oil. New York is one way east and would be easy access back to 65 south. Plan to get there about 4:oo and I%26#39;m pretty sure you%26#39;ll be able to find a free spot on the street. I also heard about the $45.oo lots (last year they wrere $25.00)

    airport car rental

Hi! We are coming to Indiana in Sept. to visit our son and family and will need a car. We are staying in Noblesville. Just wondering if anyone knows if any of the car rentals at the airport are better than others? We have rented from Enterprise in Indiana but weren%26#39;t too impressed (car wasn%26#39;t ready - had to wait for one to be washed - all of them were dirty). We%26#39;ve rented from Dollar before (in Hawaii) and liked their service, etc.

Any thoughts? We may drive up to Chicago for a Cubs game, too. Just haven%26#39;t clicked submit for some of those pricey tickets. ; )

    airport car rental

No opinion on car rentals. While in Florida used Hertz was fine. When in Californian used national ( no longer) But if planning on driving up to Chicago get one with a GPS to get to the ballpark. Plan on 3 or 4 hour drive if not much traffic. Thought of staying in a hotel for a night? Then go to the ball game. But I agree Wrigley Field is a place to check out a game at least once in your lifetime. Enjoy.

    airport car rental

The car rental companies are all about the same. I go with whatever is cheapest. For the last year I%26#39;ve used either www.hotwire.com or booked via Southwest.com. Sometimes you don%26#39;t know what company you are getting until you pay, but hotwire only uses the major companies so no worries there.

I go with whatever rental is cheapest..... I%26#39;ve used Priceline several times, but currently have a reservation with Enterprise since I found an online coupon that gave me a better price than the price Priceline turned down! Seems like each city has their ';cheapest'; rental companies %26amp; rarely the same in different cities. I%26#39;ve also heard a good place to rent cars is thru Costco.

Another thought on going to a game is to take the South Shore train from northern IN : http://www.nictd.com/

You%26#39;d have to do some research on where to depart %26amp; how to get to the game. Sorry, I%26#39;m not that familiar.

All of the standard car rental chains (e.g. Hertz, National/Budget, etc.) are present at the Indy airport, though not all in one location (this will change with opening of the new passenger terminal in Nov.). Currently, you will take your rental company%26#39;s shuttle bus to their location, generally about a five minute ride. Although I never rent a car in Indy because I live here, some of my colleagues from out of town report good results with both National and Hertz.

Figure on 3.5+ hours to Wrigley Field, and check on construction progress at the I-65/I-80 interchange. A bit of a mess currently.

I%26#39;ve always used Alamo. Unlimited mileage and very competitive reate

    30th bday weekend getaway suggestions?

looking to drive within 2 hours or so from Chicago, to a romantic, fun, memorable area new to us. Already been to Galena %26amp; Starved Rock. This will be in late Sept.

Husband %26amp; I like to walk around, see some sites, cute shops, steak/italian/seafood restaurants, maybe a romantic outing like a carriage ride or sunset dinner cruise. we%26#39;re easy to please %26amp; pretty casual. I was thinking a romantic cute cabin with jacuzzi for two in the room somewhere....? any ideas where we can go? per night under $150. I want to ring in my 30%26#39;s and have fun memories of the bday :0)

    30th bday weekend getaway suggestions?

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is nice. The trees will be turning in late Sept. You can stay in a B and B right across from the Lake, cute shops, etc. A little longer drive will get you to Kohler, Wis. And don%26#39;t forget Chicago! You can find a weekend rate under $150 at lots of downtown hotels, take a carriage ride, a dinner cruise, see a show. We live in Chicago and just had a ';staycation'; downtown. It was great!

    30th bday weekend getaway suggestions?

Check out Monticello, Indiana...known mostly for Indiana Beach (and those commercials with the crow that says ';There%26#39;s more than corn in Indiana';. You can rent a cabin or cottage along Lake Shafer. It%26#39;s a nice area, it has the amusement park (which is rarely busy), and lots of nature scenery.

    Also, a few more suggestions...

    - Sagatuck, Michigan (about 3 hours from Chicago)

    - Indiana Dunes State Park (hotels nearby in Chesterton, IN...about 1 hr from Chicago)

    - Koontz Lake, Indiana - cabins and cottages available for rent. Peaceful, boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, or just relaxing. Located off US 30 about 2 hours from Chicago.

    - Bloomington, IN - If you want to drive a little farther, Bloomington Indiana is a BEAUTIFUL town with a great downtown square, shopping, nature, hills and forests. It%26#39;s just under 4 hours from Chicago. Nearby Brown County is one of the prettiest places I have ever visited...somewhat similar to Starved Rock, but the size of an entire county.

I would NOT recommend Monticello for a memorable weekend. I have a cottage on the lake, and as we like to just go an chill out, there%26#39;s not much else to do. Food choices are slim to none, and Indiana Beach has new owners this year, and they%26#39;ve made a lot of changes to the park.

I would however recommend the South Haven or Saugatuck area of Michigan. Cute shops, good food and much more to do. The Old Harbor Inn in South Haven is a nice place to stay if you want to be in the middle of things.

If you want to spend a little more, check out Serenity Springs in Michigan City. www.serenity-springs.com Totally relaxing, carriage rides, jacuzzi in rooms. It%26#39;s wonderful!

  • Where to eat near Purdue and fun things to do

My daughter%26#39;s two best friends are graduating highschool. One is headed to FIT in NYC and the other to Purdue in Indiana. For the NYC friend we are putting together a NYC survival bag with subway pass, Time Out NYC mag., espresso gift cert., etc. Would like to do something similar for the friend who is headed to Purdue but don%26#39;t know what is around there. What are some cool things/places to eat that students there like to go to? I can try to contact them and get some gift cards.

    Thanks!

    What a great gift idea!

This website will give you more information about the Lafayette area.

A lot of my friends went to Purdue, and I know that Indianapolis and Chicago were also fun weekend getaways for them.

    I hope this helps!

Where to eat near Purdue and fun things to do

How about the Triple X diner? (Despite its name, I assure you it%26#39;s NOT an adult entertainment establishment). It is right there across the street from campus, and has been featured on the Food Network%26#39;s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I%26#39;ve never been there, but I know some former Purdue students who have told me it has good food!

    triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com/index-2.html

Thanks guys. These are great suggestions. I had just about given up that anyone would post!!

Another thought is a gift card to the University Book Store or Follett%26#39;s. Not only do they have school supplies, but they have a big selection of Purdue apparel, something every new student needs. http://www.purdueu.com/ or www.bkstr.com/Home/10001-10258-1?demoKey=d.

When I was in school, it was common for people to order a couple of pizzas from Papa Johns. It was decent %26amp; cheap and close to campus. There%26#39;s also some chains like Starbucks, Chipotle, Taco Bell, Panera Bread, Einstein%26#39;s Bagels.

Finally, Snowbear Frozen Custard is a local place that is close to campus and very yummy: http://www.snowbearfc.com/

Colts Game 9-21 I Have Players Tickets And Need Hotel Info

My friends son plays for the Colts, usually meet him in Texas, Calif or other cities. Comming to Indy this year and would appreciated any hotel info. Dont think I can afford downtown although that would be nice. Other posts have warned about parking issues game day thus I wanted to stay close as possible.

    TY

Colts Game 9-21 I Have Players Tickets And Need Hotel Info

If you don%26#39;t rent a car (there%26#39;s loads to do in the downtown area)you would save on that and the expense of parking so you might be able to afford staying downtown. Parking for games in Indianapolis is no different than in other cities, get there early and you%26#39;ll have more options on where to park, however like in other cities, the closer you get to the stadium the more expensive it is going to be to park. If you go early then there shouldn%26#39;t be any major problems for you.

Colts Game 9-21 I Have Players Tickets And Need Hotel Info

honestly only some high end hotels will be out of your price range. There are many affordable hotels downtown. Which is where you should stay. Everything is within walking distance. Restaurants, the stadium, and shopping. Check out indy.com for some more information on hotels and the downtown area. Good Luck!

The Stadium is easily reached from a few hotels on the westside. By the airport there is an Adam%26#39;s mark. At I 465 and Rockville Rooad there is a Wingate Inn, Best Western and one other. It%26#39;s an easy/quick drive downntown. Parking is free on the streets. I lke to park on NewYork or Ohio Street just north of the state capitol building, but would plan on getting there about three hours before game time. It%26#39;s probably about a half mile walk but on a nice day it%26#39;s great. There are plenty of things to do downtown to kill time before. Yo might also check out motels at the I 65 and Southport Rd exit. Another quick/easy drive to downtown

    Colts/Bears

All right locals it%26#39;s time for predictions.

Colts 23 Bears 7 (the 7 is only if Hester gets a chance to put them in scoring positon)

    Colts/Bears

Peyton needs to have his A game or else.

Colts 17 Bears 10. OR it could be a blow out either way. Notice this is why I don%26#39;t bet especially by the spread. IT will get you every time.

    Colts/Bears

    Ooops.

    Bears looked pretty good.

Colts aren%26#39;t firing on all cylinders yet.

Brady-less Pats win over Buffalo, and Peyton/Reggie/Marvin/Joseph can%26#39;t make it happen against the Bears. Not a good start to the season at all - but plenty of time to get properly tuned-up.

Regardless, yay for Purdue QB Kyle Orton - showed his talent off nicely.

    Results..........Sickening

Maybe the Colts ought to stat looking to draft QB Nate Davis out of Ball St. The best college QB in the state.

    Yeah !! Moving to Indianapolis!

    Dare I say Indy,LOL ???

Our house is for sale and we are scouring the online websites for houses in the Inianapolis area. Haven%26#39;t decided on the exact location that we want to be in yet, but are looking at Avon,Brownsburg,Fishers and Carmel mainly. Would love to hear any advice from anyone about great places to shop and eat. I especially would love to get some advice about specialty type places as I already know all the chain stores and restaurants.

Hubby is already working there and would love to hear any recommendations for good restaurants as he is eating out every day of the week. One question we have and this is especially for people who have actually been to Italy--are there any really, really good Italian dining experiences in or around Indy? I am seriously not talking about chain restaurants that specialize in American-Italian food !!!

I%26#39;m sure that I will have lots of questions as the time for the move approaches and I would really appreciate any help from the local experts! We are actually from Anderson but have been away from home for many, many years so we are no longer that familiar with Indy.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!!!

    Yeah !! Moving to Indianapolis!

    Hi Witty,

It depends on what region of Italy you are speaking of, but even then, it is difficult to find truly authentic dishes in Indy. I would suggest Amalfi at 86th and Ditch Rd on the West side. It is a little difficult to find, but it has a charming atmosphere and they play your traditional Italian opera music. Bella Vita is on the North Side on Geist Reservoir. It has lovely views and fairly good Italian food, but it is americanized. I have yet to find an Italian restaurant that blows me away, but I%26#39;ll keep trying...or travelling back to Italy.

Best of luck. If your husband learns of any other great Italian restaurant%26#39;s, let us know!

As far as shopping, there are some very nice shops in the Geist area. Check out the website atgeist.com They do reviews of the local boutiques. There are also some cute shops in Broad Ripple. Happy Hunting.

    Yeah !! Moving to Indianapolis!

I love Iaria%26#39;s on S. College Ave, near downtown for Italian food and a wonderful retro feel.

Thanks to both of you for the advice--and the website ! When I say Italian food I am referring to any regional food of Italy ! I am not picky as long as it is really not American Italian!! No garlic mashed potatoes and no pasta swimming in a sea of red sauce. Nice wine. :)

I have actually seen Illaria%26#39;s mentioned on here--will give it a try. I saw online that there was supposed to be a good Italian restaurant in Zionsville and that the pastry chef,I believe, was supposed to be from Rome. I can%26#39;t recall the name right now but does anyone know of the one I am referring to?

Hubby is looking for any kind of food right now as long as the restaurant is good ! he is a big eater but doesn%26#39;t want to spend megabucks for every meal. So far he has been resigned to eating at chain restaurants like Outback and Montana Buffalo Grill(?)--that sort of thing which is good for a while but soon starts to get old!

Also wondering if anyone can recommend any good places to shop for meat when we move there(butchers, delis, etc.)Anywhere in or in the surrounding areas of Indy !

On another note--if you could live in or around Indianapolis, where would you choose to live? And why? No country life for me anymore, thank you !!! I need people and activity, not cows and pigs!!!

Google Massachussetts Avenue, Indianapolis for some good restaurant/shop information. Asiago is a very good restaurant your husband might want to try. There%26#39;s also Amici%26#39;s at 601 E New York Street and Mama Carolla%26#39;s at 1031 E 54th Street.

Browsburg might be a little too far away from most of the shopping, events and dining for you and your family, perhaps Avon as well. As someone who spent her entire adult life in the Indianapolis area that just moved to England in 2007, I%26#39;m very familiar with the Indianapolis area. I%26#39;d say NE Indianapolis and specifically Lawrence Township, Fishers, Carmel and Zionsville for places to live. However, Zionsville might have too much of a rural feel for you, still worth checking out! Great shops and restaurants in Zionsville and not chains!

Which side of town is your husband staying? That would help with giving local favorites. And wherever he is, he needs to try Yats (Fishers 96th St, north College Ave, %26amp; Mass. Ave). Great N%26#39;orleans food with great prices.

Welcome Witty, my passionate Italian traveling friend!

As it happens, we%26#39;re getting ready to move to Seattle ...

But as a 50 year resident of Indy, I%26#39;m happy to give you my advice:

    Area of City -

I%26#39;m a Carmel/Fishers/Zionsville (north side) proponent. The significant majority of excellent restaurants are either downtown (another option) or on the north side. While the expanding west side can be attractive too with an increasing diversity of housing options, and the south side has strong proponents, the suburban north side has superior entertainment, dining, and shopping options.

Restaurants an Italian traveler would likely appreciate:

Ambrosia (Broad Ripple - north side) - relatively newly renovated, long-time family owned business. Get there on a slow night and you may have one of the family members wait your table. Fairly expensive ($40 to $60 or more per person, if you get wine - who doesn%26#39;t, eh?).

Amalfi%26#39;s (86th %26amp; Ditch - north side) - as mentioned above - family owned affair. A toss-up IMO with Ambrosia as best Italian dining in the Indy area. One advantage, will catch Peyton Manning in there frequently (he%26#39;s a regular).

Matteo%26#39;s (Noblesville, on the town square - FAR north side) - our favorite ';go to'; restaurant. A bit more moderately priced, and with a bit more personality than the two prior restaurants. A developing following among central Indiana diners. Owned by a member of the family that owns Amalfi%26#39;s. Another fine Italian dining destination.

il Villagio (Zionsville) - we%26#39;ve had hit and miss experiences here, with the hits being spectacularly great dishes and the misses being good, but falling short of the quality of the prior three restaurant%26#39;s dishes. Also owned by a native Italian.

The above four have many staff who either have lived in Italy or traveled there, and will engage you in fun discussions about the differences between Italian cooking in Italy and America (principally, access to fresh ingredients and access to the beef of the Chianina breed of beef cattle). My wife and I unhesitatingly recommend the first three, and recommend the fourth due to the quality of the ';spectacular hits'; (but be braced for the less-than-spectacular misses).

Agio (downtown - Mass. Avenue) - long-time Italian favorite among downtowners. Moderately expensive to expensive. Similar in quality to the above four - but we%26#39;ve had a few more misses here, particularly lately. Not BAD meals, just not meals worth the drive.

Iaria%26#39;s and the Milano Inn are old staples in downtown (very near southeast side) Indy. IMO, they offer good food and we typically enjoy eating there. Iaria%26#39;s is more a spaghetti type place, and the Milano Inn suffers a bit from a VERY worn and dated interior and long-term and not very passionate ownership. Good moderately priced options (Iaria%26#39;s in particular).

Then there are a bunch of americanized options - some good, some not-so-good. Buca di Beppo, Mama Carollas, Amici%26#39;s, Salvatore%26#39;s (across the street from Amalfi%26#39;s) and many more.

And to your last question, I%26#39;d choose to live either in Carmel or downtown Indy. We%26#39;ve come to appreciate downtown Louisville from our visits to our daughter. While Indianapolis doesn%26#39;t have the derby and all the events surrounding it, nor does it have the river life, it is a beautifully growing, increasingly cosmopolitan community. It is a VERY well governed city, with a thriving convention business, a great sports scene (you HAVE to take in a Butler home basketball game in Hinkle Fieldhouse, a dip into the soul of all true Hoosiers), and a good arts scene.

And, if you need to get a REALLY big city experience (arts, tremendously diverse dining, shopping, etc.) - Chicago is two hours closer to you than it was in Louisville ...

    Thanks again to all !

Shutterbug~ Hubby is working in the 4600 block of W.86th Street. He is staying with his sister in Anderson so he travels northeast. Traffic can be horrendous, as you all know, when he gets off work so most of the time he tries to find a restaurant near his place of work and by the time that he finishes dinner, the traffic has lightened up considerably. I%26#39;m not sure if he wants to make the trek to the downtown area after work, but he is open to all suggestions ! Honestly, we are ';eat at home'; people most of the time and he is getting sick of restaurant food! What can I say (?), I am a great cook, LOL ! I have spoiled the man!

He is open to any suggestions~~doesn%26#39;t have to be Italian, although we do love Italian food.

Dave~~~ hellooooo my friend!!!! I am moving to Indy just to be able to visit you and you are moving to Seattle ??? LOL, I%26#39;m really a nice lady!!! Wow--Seattle ! My son has been there and fell in love with it. It is one of the few places in this country that I haven%26#39;t seen but would like to someday. I do hope that all goes well for you and that you enjoy living there. Hey~~~does that mean that your house is for sale????

Thanks for all the ';Italian'; restaurants ! We will definitely give them a try. I know it is impossible to replicate our Italian dining experiences but it would be nice to find something that is at least edible and passable Italian.

Also thanks for your advice about which area to live in. I had started really targeting the Avon market, and we really did like the long strip of retail and restaurants going into Avon. However, firstly, I don%26#39;t like their property taxes which are double what I am paying now(or more), and secondly some of the housing does seem like it is in a rather rural setting. I have ';existed'; in this area for four years and I am hungry for something different. Throw me smack dab in the middle of NYC right now and I would be very happy !! Five minutes to a grocery store or restaurant, or better yet to be able to actually walk somewhere would be pure heaven !!

We have been looking in Carmel, but I haven%26#39;t found anything yet that has caught my eye. I have actually found much more in Fishers. ';In'; Indy, I don%26#39;t know where to start looking?? I see houses but don%26#39;t know if they are in a safe place?

I think it was in Carmel that I saw a place called ';O%26#39;Malleys';, a meat market/grocery store? Is that a good place to shop?

OK, I did fall in love with what I saw in Carmel!! That art district looks wonderful as does that new outdoor-type mall ';something Trace'; I think?

Thanks again and I will keep asking questions as I think of them !

Other restaurants that aren%26#39;t nationwide chains? Pizza places, hamburger joints,home-cooking,buffet type places???

And Yats sounds very interesting ! We did live on the gulf side of Texas for eight years and were able to get a great mixture of Texas/Louisiana style cooking !!

Amalfi%26#39;s is on 86th St., about 2 - 3 miles from where your husband works (I presume he%26#39;s working near Park 100, just west of Michigan Road on 86th St.). The town of Zionsville is very close to that area, and has some nice restaurants: Brix %26amp; il Villagio come to mind.

Our favorite restaurant (Gabby %26amp; I argue about this) is Peterson%26#39;s, just west of the 96th St %26amp; I-69 interchange. It%26#39;s locally owned, has great service, great mixed drinks, and is IMO the most simply elegant of the restaurants in Indy. It%26#39;s where we go on special occasions (or one of the above Italian restaurants).

We live in the Village of West Clay. You%26#39;re welcome to buy our home ... although you sound as though you%26#39;re more primed for a downtown Zionsville or Carmel type location.

O%26#39;Malia%26#39;s grocery is a good place to shop. They were purchased by Marsh Supermarkets last year, and have gradually been assuming less and less of the unique, almost boutique market kind of store atmosphere/service. But we buy our meat there - still have a very nice selection of good meat. Otherwise, we prefer to shop at the Fresh Market or directly at a Marsh Supermarket.

Amalfi%26#39;s is a good suggestion %26amp; there is a cluster of locally owned places at 86th %26amp; Ditch. He could drive across 86th, eat %26amp; let the interstate clear out before heading to Anderson. Here%26#39;s some I like: Sawadzee (spelling?)Thai food, Ocean World sushi %26amp; Japanese, Smee%26#39;s Place pub food, Puccini%26#39;s (I think it%26#39;s locally owned) pizza %26amp; Americanized Italian, %26amp; there%26#39;s a really good seafood place, Kona Jack%26#39;s at 96th %26amp; Meridian.

The Marsh in Carmel at 146th %26amp; SR 31 just had a grand re-opening %26amp; from what I could see everything is top notch, especially produce %26amp; meat.

I can%26#39;t speak to the Ace in Indy, but I%26#39;ve used them in other cities (San Francisco, Atlanta, and New Orleans - all about 1 year to 18 months ago). Ace was perfectly fine, in fact I would say they were superior to most rental service - in 2 of the 3 cases I was upgraded from a compact to a luxury/premium car at no charge.

In my current work, we exclusively use National - so I haven%26#39;t had the opportunity to use them lately.

  • Colts vs. Ravens 10/12...where to stay? tailgate?

Hey all! We are coming into Indy for our 1st Colts experience...hoping to tailgate and stay somewhere near the stadium. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Colts vs. Ravens 10/12...where to stay? tailgate?

There’s a lot of good information on a previous post “Colts visit…” last updated on July 2. I think it all still holds true on where to stay. Downtown is still the best bet. There’s still some availability at the Conrad for $250/nt, which is probably our most upscale hotel. If you can wait until a few days before traveling, try Priceline for the other downtown hotels. Or check the small inns on the Old Northside.

As far as tailgating, I’m sure other posters can help more with that. I know they tailgate around Pennsylvania and South Street, which is about 2 -3 blocks east of the stadium. I used to know more when the Colts were at the dome. Not sure if they tailgate around PanAm Plaza anymore.

There’s lots of Colts fans in Nebraska (my sister being one!) Have fun in Indy!

Colts vs. Ravens 10/12...where to stay? tailgate?

At first when I saw NE I thought it was New England, as in the dreaded Patriots, but nebraska is fine. Downtown would be the most fun to stay but might be pretty hard to find a room. On the westside at I 465 and Rockville Rd are three or four pretty nice and reasonable places.(I%26#39;ll have to get back on the names.) It%26#39;s an easy 10 minute drive to downtown. getting into a parking lot to tailgate might be pretty hard. Most of the lots are reserved. I might have a spot for you though that%26#39;s a block from the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Again will get back. How did you manage to get ahold of Colts tix? Hope the new coach out there gets things turned around, back to Osbourne-like teams

There are loads of hotels downtown. Most upmarket is the Conrad. There is also a Hyatt, Westin and Marriott DT. For ones more reasonably priced, there%26#39;s a very good Hampton Inn Dt as well as Hilton Garden Inn and Courtyard by Marriott to name a few.

LOL Indyob...i%26#39;ll take nebraska over new england any day! to be honest, i%26#39;m not sure how my hubbie scored the tix ~ i was to excited to ask! thanks for the hotel advise, if you think of specific names i am all ears...if not no biggie. we are REALLY interested in the tailgate location advise, though. neither of us has ever been to indy so we r clueless!

There are lots of hotels in downtown Indy. The Conrad is great, but I also like the Westin. If you decide to stay at a smaller inn, I would use The Villa. It has about 6 rooms, a spa, and a restaurant. When I toured the rooms a few years ago, I wondered why people always stay at the big chains when this great place is available. As for tailgating, try the parking lot directly north of the State Capitol Building. Access is from Capitol Avenue, which is a one way street going south. We tailgate there and really like it. I think it is $20 for parking. Hope you have fun!

HELP! Nice, Safe, Trick or Treating areas for out of towner?

I have been to Indianapolis a few times for business. My next meeting is oct. 30th. We have decided to pack the kids costumes and trick or treat there. Any suggestions for a nice, upscale, safe area for my precious children? Help would be appreciated.

HELP! Nice, Safe, Trick or Treating areas for out of towner?

The northeside area zionsville carmel fishers and or Greenwood Plainfield Brownsburg Greenfield all would be fine. Indianapolis Proper would not be very good. HOpe this helps.

HELP! Nice, Safe, Trick or Treating areas for out of towner?

I live on the southeast side of town in the Beech Grove area and it is very safe. You can%26#39;t turn your head and not see a police car. With that in mind also you should watch your speed when driving thru town.

If you are staying downtown, and don%26#39;t want to travel all the way to Zionsville, Carmel, or Fishers, I would recommend the Forest Hills area. It is a very nice older neighborhood with lots of families. It is bordered by four streets: Kessler, College, Winthrop, and Northview. Basically, it%26#39;s about 4x5 blocks. No worries there.

If you are staying downtown, I highly recommend going to Lockerbie Square. It is an historic neighborhood (more upscale) bordered by East/Michigan/New York/College. I live in the square, and we have many people from all over town that come to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat. I recommend starting out around 6:30 or 7pm at the latest. We turn our lights out at 8:30.

It%26#39;s not a large neighborhood, so your children won%26#39;t be exhausted by the end of the evening. And if they have a lot of energy, Merdian Kessler, my second choice, would be a 10 minute drive north on College.

    Hotels near IU Med Center

Hello everyone. I love Indy and I have stayed there often but never because of a loved one at IU Med Center. My sister is there receiving cancer treatments and we want to stay as close as possible. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice and close to stay? Thank You!

    Hotels near IU Med Center

There are a few University Place Hotel in next to the hospital and on campus. There are some next to the canal a residence inn and some others I%26#39;m not sure of the names.

    Hotels near IU Med Center

University Place Hotel is definatly the closest and is a really nice hotel. The provide free transportion on a hotel shuttle anywhere downtown and have affordable parking for being downtown.

Downtown Indy is very compact, so any downtown hotel will be OK. I hope that everything goes as well as possible for your sister. Lots of people I know have received their cancer treatment there, and it has always gone well. Good luck.

I just stayed at University Place last week. WONDERFUL staff %26amp; awesome hotel. Complimentary shuttle to downtown but no complimentary breakfast (I was eating at conference, anyway).

I got the room thru priceline around $40 - $50/night.

You might ask if they offer any discounted rates for your situation. Best wishes for success with the treatments.

Looking for clean room for quick stay

Going up to Greenwood to visit my son and just want an economical but clean room. Dont care much for the frills that are important if I am going to be somewhere for awhile but dont want bottom of the barrel either. Anyone with suggestions? I was looking at Holiday Inn express or Quality Inn and Suites a bit closer to Indy. Just cant get much feedback. thanks for any help. Leaving Sat , Sept 20.08

Looking for clean room for quick stay

There is a Holiday Inn Express right off the County Line Road Greenwood exit behind Walmart, 1180 WILSON DRIVE. Beech Grove has a brand new Holiday Inn Express that just opened. It is on 5-6 miles from Greenwood and closer to downtown Indianapolis. It is located at 5302 VICTORY DR. Just off the first exit east of I-65 on I-465.

Looking for clean room for quick stay

Thank you so much for your information. I will call and see which has the better deal as we are used to nice places but hate to overpay when we wont be in the room but a small amount of time. Didnt know about the new hotel. THanks again!!

I am looking for a hotel or resort in Northern Indiana for a family get together in early December. Older grandparents and 2 young families with young children. A pool would be nice, suites aad a comfortable place to congregate are the requirements. Any suggestions?

Family get together in Indiana--Where is a good place?

The Radisson in Merrillville has a pretty nice indoor pool area. The hotel itself is on the older side, but it%26#39;s centrally located near shopping and restaurants.

    JUst Back From Moto GP

Got back home yesterday from a great weekend in Indy despite the weather. It was dry and sunny all day Sat. so we got to see the dirt track race at the fairgrounds too. The stands at the fairgrounds were packed. The crowd was an international one too. The people behind us were Japanese or atleast asian. Didn%26#39;t speak english so I knew they weren%26#39;t locals LOL. They introduced several dirt track ledgends that night including ';King Kenny'; Roberts.

Just want to correct an announcement made that night that the young lady racing Sat. was the first woman to make the final at a national dirt track. This is not true. The first woman was Dianne Cox from Oregon back in the late %26#39;70%26#39;s.

My hat%26#39;s off to the crew at the Speedway. They dried the track in about 40 minutes to allow the GP to run. The event workers/vendor people were all doing a great job. The police had traffic condrol down to a T. You%26#39;d think they had done this before! LOL

The only negative for the weekend was that the promoter had no idea how much money motorcycle people spend. They were out, completely out of event tee shirts by Sat. PM.

Overall I think everone there had a good time.

    JUst Back From Moto GP

    Bassman,

Glad you had a great experience in Indianapolis. Hope this becomes an annual event as it sounded like a great time for all concerned. Watching some races on road courses on TV, can imagine it is really wild when run on dirt at the Fairgrounds!

    JUst Back From Moto GP

Although I%26#39;m in Seattle now, my friends and relatives back home (many having attended the Moto GP) said it was a great event - similar in terms of crowd to the USGP. And business owners in Indy were ecstatic, saying this was a GREAT crowd to have in town.

I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;ll be better prepared next year to handle the level of commerce you all bring.

Great positive feedback. Yes, I%26#39;m sure this was a learning year for the Speedway. The city loves hosting the races at the track. Too bad some people Bernie Ecklestein could not apprreciate a little Hoosier or American hospitality. That pompus axx. Glad you had a good weekend. Hope you come back next year.

I agree it was a great event, and I was really impresssed. I have been to mid ohio several times but this was my first trip to Indy for any race.

The motoGP set up is by far my favorite, and we will be back next year.

So glad we had one dry day to enjoy, and can only imagine this event if its dry. I hope there is more attendance. The passion for the fans that were there was infectous.

    Great time was had!

DaveInIndy now in Seattle??? Guess it won%26#39;t be long til all of us back in Indy start getting great reviews from the Great Pacific Northwest!! Hope things going good out there. Don%26#39;t become a Seahawk fan, we%26#39;ll keep you posted on the new things in town. In case you haven%26#39;t heard the operating cost of the New Lucas Oil Stadium are spiraling upwards. The sound at the first concert did not get the best reviews. And believe it or not, no Pacers have been arrested lately.

Where to stay downtown in Feb

Looking for hotel for Feb. visit to Indy. Will be attending gymnastics meet at convention center. Most skywalk hotels have no rooms available and many others fully booked. Am now looking at staybridge suites or homewood suites. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Will it be easy to get to convention center from either hotel?

Where to stay downtown in Feb

The homewood suites gets great reviews. It is on South Meridian which is right in the middle of downtown. Will be within walking distance of everything. That would be highly recommended. Could also try Hampton Inn and or The Omni or The Crowne Plaza hotel. Hope this helps. Check out indy.com for more information.

Guys weekend for MotoGP...what else to do?

Well my Dad is flying up from Atlanta to watch the MotoGP with me and some male friends. I am from Columbus, and have been to Indy before but dont know the ins and outs. So what I am looking for:

    1. Sports Bar: Watch any college/NFL games on Sat/Sun

    2. Cool bar to hang out at, not so much the college crowd, maybe a bit more 30-40 crowd?

    Any advice is great.

    Thanks

Guys weekend for MotoGP...what else to do?

Will you be staying downtown? Most of the bars downtown will fit the bill. I suggest The Slippery Noodle located at South street %26amp; Meridian for great blues, great drinks, and good food. Another area for lots of bars in a close area would be Broad Ripple which is 20 minutes north of downtown. All the bars will have a TV with the games on. Enjoy!!

Guys weekend for MotoGP...what else to do?

Check out the Rathskeller on Mass. Ave if you are downtown. It%26#39;s a beautiful historic building %26amp; the beer garden (sorry don%26#39;t know the German spelling) should still be open. I agree that the Slippery Noodle is great too %26amp; also in an historic building. There%26#39;s lots of sports bar type places near Circle Center Mall.

Have fun. It should be a great event %26amp; exciting weekend.

Where about will you be staying?

Staying on the southside of Indy...but figure we can go anywhere after the race on the way back to the hotel.

Basically wanna make sure we got a good place to catch the USC game, and other college games, get some grub and relax before another big day on Sunday.

    Thanks

I your staying around Southport/Greenwood/Beech grove area there are lots of places. At the I 65 and Southport exit there is a bar (Bubbazz?) on the east side of the interstate on the northside of Southport Rd. At the County Line Rd. exit there is Your Call Sports bar (C Line Rd and Emerson in te same strip as Kroger) Lots of big screens there. At Greenwood exit there is Wilsons or The Oaken Barrel. Just west of the interstate (Look for the airplane stuck in the roof). In Beech Grove check out O%26#39;Gara%26#39;s on Main Street in The Grove. Johnny O (the owner) is race car driver Sarah Fisher%26#39;s fatherin law. Near The Speedway would be McGilvery%26#39;s at 30th and High School Road.

Just a word of advice. Since you will be in Indiana %26amp; NOtre Dame is in INdiana. Don%26#39;t make too much noise for USC. There are lots of Notre Dame faithful having some rough years lately. NOt to mention USC has always been a HUGE rivalry. But have fun. Fair Warning.

My mistake! I think you are going to want to cheer for OSU. I can not even spell it. Sorry. NO hard feelings.

Don%26#39;t forget that there%26#39;s a dirt track National at the fair grounds Sat. evening. Going to watch Kenny Coolbeth from CT, National #1 show those mid west guys the way around the track.

well no worries, I wont be cheering for OSU, or USC.

I gotta get some more info on that dirt track event. Do you know when that starts?

Well the Oaken Barrel sounds like the place to be after checking some things out. I just cant seem to find out the TV situation. I would really like to know if getting a view of TV will be tough. Sounds like they are always busy, so I just dont wanna drive there and find out we are sitting in the table with no TV view.

    Thanks

    Brown County fall colors

    Hi,

I am planning to go camping in Brown county state park between 11-13 Oct. Would I be able to see the Fall colors?

Also would it be cold for camping at that time?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

    Brown County fall colors

The timing for the leaves is usually a bit different every year, but that is usually one of the best times to see beautiful fall colors.

Usually by October it does get pretty chilly at night, plus there tends to be a chilly dew on things so be sure that you pack a nice warm sleeping bag, sweatshirts, a warm jacket, etc. During the day it can still be pretty warm but almost definitely not hot. It just depends. Layers help because you%26#39;ll get hotter as you hike.

Are you from Lafayette, Indiana or Lafayette, LA? If you%26#39;re from Louisiana, what%26#39;s chilly to me, might feel cold to you, so just bring more layers.

I%26#39;ve camped quite a few times in October and I really like it. The crispness and beautiful colors are hard to beat!

    Brown County fall colors

I just moved into Lafayette, IN. Thanks for your advice. I will definitely visit it then but give a thought to the camping plan..

    Hotwire/Priceline for Airport Hotel

Has anyone used Hotwire or Priceline for an airport hotel?

    Hotwire/Priceline for Airport Hotel

Could be sketchy using either of those two services. The hyatt place gets good reviews. There are plenty of hotels in the area that you can choose from. Pick the one that best suits your budget and style. The courtyard seems pretty new and nice. I have been there for training meetings, but not stayed there.

    Hotwire/Priceline for Airport Hotel

Did you use Priceline for a hotel at the airport. I will be doing the same for the 28th

I did use priceline for the airport hotel. We got the Adams Mark %26amp; tho I%26#39;ve seen some less than favorable reviews, we thought it was a VERY NICE hotel. Accommodations were wonderful. No continental brfst, but hotel restaurant was VERY nice. We also used the airport shuttle, which was very convenient.

    Overall experience was excellent!

    Best route thru Indianapolis

We will be driving thru Indiana in a couple of days on I-70 coming from Illinois headed to Ohio. From the map it looks like it might be an easier drive to take 74 around the south and east of Indianpolis and then meet up with I-70 again to head east. Is that the easiest driving for someone not familiar with the area?

    Best route thru Indianapolis

Depends where in Ohio. For Cincinnati the I 74 rout would be the best. From 465 on the westside stay on 70 towards downtown Indy. When you get to the eastside of downtown look for I 65 South. Take it to 465 east. Then look for I 74. To Columbus/Dayton stay on I 70 thru downtown. You will see signs directing you to I65 North/I70 East. When you get on I70 east it is a straight shot there. If you hit Indy in rush hour(7-8:30 a.m. 4:30-6:00 p.m.) expect an additonal 15 minutes of drive time. otherwise traffic flows. From I70 on the westside I don%26#39;t reccomend taking 465 around towards the airport. Traffic backs up at IN 37, US 31 and the Emerson St exits

    Best route thru Indianapolis

The routes mentioned would be my recommendation also. Have a safe trip.

    Piano Bar Downtown?

My wife and I will be visiting Indianapolis this week. Is there a nice piano bar downtown that we would love to settle in and listen to some romantic songs?

    Piano Bar Downtown?

Not really any piano bars. But St. Elmo%26#39;s Steak House has a bar area where a jazz band usually plays. They have famous shrimp cocktail sauce lots of horseradish. And a great blues bar The Slippery Noodle that has two stages one in front and one in the back. Also great drink prices and well drinks. Also good food. Those are two options. Also a dueling piano bar. Lots of younger type crowd Howl At The Moom. Plus a cover charge. Never been there. Check out indy.org for more information.

    Piano Bar Downtown?

Thanks for the info. Looks like some fun spots to hit.

Great ethnic food on 4th street

We stopped in Bloomington to experience an interesting college town and we enjoyed the bookstores and cafes. On 4th street near the university, you will find a cluster of great ethnic restaurants on a quiet tree-lined street, many of which have outdoor seating. It was a real treat.

Great ethnic food on 4th street

Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in Bloomington. You need to come back some labor day weekend when they block off about 4 blocks around this restaurant row for the 4th Street Arts Festival.

Also, for my use (as I live in Bloomington) and for possible use on the forum which of the restaurants did you check out and/or enjoy the most? (I for one have enjoyed Yats (think the name has changed, but the food, cajun, has remained the same), Casablanca, and the Italian Place (what the heck is the name, it%26#39;s late). I%26#39;ve not eaten at the two Tibetian restaurants in this immediate area (that%26#39;s right folks, there%26#39;s two there), but have eaten at the 3rd one in town (although it is less ';fully tibetian';) located a couple of blocks north on Grant Street.

If you live anywhere within a reasonable driving distance, I suggest you consider a return trip over the 1st weekend in October. It%26#39;s the 15th annual Lotus World Music %26amp; Arts Festival (see a prior post of mine) a REAL gem of Bloomington.

For a typical Lotus Festival (if there is such a thing), they close off a few streets downtown (for outdoor, tented, venues) and have some indoor venues (theatres, nightclubs %26amp; churches) for a total of about 6-10 venues, add in 20+/- world class artists/groups from around the world playing a wide variety of musical genres in multiple sets Friday %26amp; Saturday night (plus a separate admission Thursday concert, a free all afternoon concert on Saturday and an all but free show on Sunday afternoon) and you can see how its pretty special. And, it a real bargain, full festival ticket (Friday %26amp; Saturday nights) only $30 in advance!

(Full disclosure - I%26#39;m on the board of directors - but also can say I attended %26amp; enjoyed Lotus for years before formally joining the organization about 2 years ago).

More information about this year%26#39;s festival (lineup, venues, schedules, links to artists sites, etc) can be found at www.lotusfest.org.

Again, glad you enjoyed Bloomington and hope you return soon. Go ahead and post questions and/or requests for any pointers on your next trip if you want and I%26#39;ll try to respond.

  • Hotwire? Priceline?

Spending one night in Indy, after flight in early Sept. It will be my friend %26amp; I, but meeting her husband there, (so 2 rooms), while I%26#39;ll be attending a conference the next day. Thinking of staying downtown or Keystone Crossing area. Want to be in walking distance to shopping, restaurants etc.

I%26#39;ve not used Priceline or Hotwire before, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Is it better to try now or wait till date is closer?

Are all Hotwire/Priceline downtown hotels in walking distance to Circle Center? My key requests are safe, clean, comfortable room %26amp; Circle Center location. How many stars? Both 3.5 %26amp; 4 stars show same features, same radius, just different price.

What is the best way to get from airport to downtown? Would a cab or Carey service be more budget friendly?

    THANKS for any suggestions!!!

    Hotwire? Priceline?

Be very careful. University Place %26amp; Conference Center is rated with Priceline to be a 4 star. I bid on a four star. Then I got that hotel. Ugh, the first time I bid on a four star hotel, I got the Omni, which was fantastic. The University Place %26amp; Conferece Center, is not a 4 star, in my opinion, and not walking distance to downtown, especially late at nite. We found it hard to find a cab after leaving Slippery Noodle late at nite. I%26#39;d bid on a 3 star or 3.5, and hope they don%26#39;t upgrade you to a four star which Ive heard they do. I love Indy, but, the best is when you stay downtown. Its great to walk everywhere, Good Luck...... Priceline is great, but, you have to do your homework.......

    Hotwire? Priceline?

Thanks Cindy... I have read that on these posts %26amp; was thinking of doing 3.5 stars for that reason. Didn%26#39;t realize they might bump up, tho! I do have a seminar the next day at IUPUI but that would be no fun for my friends %26amp; I, the evening before...

Is it better to book now or wait a few weeks, for an early Sept date?

Do Hotwire %26amp; Priceline both use the same hotels?

    Sorry... I meant Cincy.....

I did Priceline, it was last year, when they gave me University Place. It is scary to use those websites, as when you make your bid, and they take it, thats it, no refunds. But, the savings are grand!!!! But, when you know your going, plus, you have a meeting at University Place, it might be nice to wake up %26amp; not have to jump in cab. So, if I was you, Id bid now, I wouldn%26#39;t wait too long, google Indys tourism website, check upcoming events dates. Rooms might be tough to get, if theres alot of things happening at the time you want. Go to Biddingfortravel. Hit Ohio, then Indianapolis, great info there. Whatever you do, post here, Im curious. You have nothing to lose since your meeting is at UP. Plus, they do have a free shuttle from UP, goes up till 11pm, I think. I would bid 3.5 star. You might get Crowne Plaza downtown or Hyatt. Indy is a great fun city, so many places to have fun. I suggest Slippery Noodle to hear great music. Plus dancing..... have fun :)

The rates and amount of people depend on the convention center schedule and home football schedule. If the University Center fits your wants stay there. If not I would look at getting a good deal from one of the downtown hotels websites. It is for only one night. Have a great stay. I second the Slippery Noodle for a great blues night. Great food and drinks there %26amp; really make everyone feel like their welcome what some bars don%26#39;t even try to do.

Someone mentioned they heard problems with Hotwire - when arriving at the hotel, they don%26#39;t have the reservation, etc. Has anyone encountered this?

Also, when using Priceline, do you still make your choice only by location %26amp; ';star'; rating?

Yes, you bid on location and star rating on Priceline. I%26#39;ve never bid more than a week out prior to travel. I%26#39;ve never had luck getting a low price earlier than that. Again, it depends on when you are coming to town, and yes home game schedule of the Colts.

As far as budget transportation to downtown hotels, Indygo bus service has non-stop service called the ';Green Line';. It%26#39;s $7 pp one way. Go to the Indygo.net website to check specific schedules and stops.

Stay downtown for the most fun. Try The Hampton Inn, Marriott, Hilton, or Embassy Suites. They are all right in the middle of downtown. Downtown to airport cab or carey is fine. It%26#39;s a quick 10 minute drive.

Any idea of cost to take cab from airport to downtown?

    THX!

I paid $39.00 for a room at the Hyatt Place at Keystone at the Crossing through Priceline, when I did it the night before my stay. It was a wonderful room. Best of luck.

I use hotwire a lot for car rentals, haven%26#39;t used Priceline though.

The price quoted by hotwire is the price you pay, nothing hidden. However, no insurance is included in the price of the rental. Most auto insurance policies cover you when using a rental. If unsure, check with your insurance carrier.

You might also want to check prices via www.southwest.com. Find their car rental specials, they then give a code to use when checking prices, they%26#39;ve been very competitive with hotwire lately.

Thanks for the feedback...will check as you suggested.

I%26#39;ve used priceline often %26amp; gotten great rates. No hidden fees. Just read the fine print. When you submit a bid, it doesn%26#39;t include the taxes, etc. But you%26#39;ll know the final price.

As previous poster mentioned, your insurance usually covers you in a rental car, too.

You can also google in car rental coupon codes. Recently I was submitting prices almost daily on priceline, %26amp; they weren%26#39;t accepting my offer. I found a coupon code online that I submitted thru a national car rental chain %26amp; got a lower price than the offer priceline refused! I also had the option of changing my reservation (or canceling).

Just know when you rent thru priceline or hotwire, it is a ';done deal';.

When you do hotwire, they give you the final cost before you purchase so you know up front the exact cost. They only deal with the major car rental companies, I always would get Avis or Budge through them. I just had to book a rental car, Southwest with discount code came in a little cheaper than hotwire did. Plus, when booking via the SWA site, they do ask for credit card number but you aren%26#39;t charged until after you%26#39;ve actually rented the car.
