Indianapolis

Has anyone been to the mall down there with the nice stores? Are they on central or eastern time? What is the city like? How close is the mall to the nearest expressway? Thanks!

Indianapolis

Hi -

In response to the Indiana time question, we are currently the same time as eastern time.

There is some great shopping in Indianapolis. The following is a recap:

Circle Center Mall - This mall is located downtown and is very, very nice for a downtown mall. It is located not far off I-70 or I-65. This mall has anchor stores such as Nordstroms and Parisians. Downtown Indianapolis is a very nice and safe place. If you go here, be sure to go to the canal walk. I haven%26#39;t been myself, but all of the people I know say it%26#39;s great.

Fashion Mall - This mall is right off I-465 and Keystone Avenue on the northside of Indianapolis. It is more of an upscale mall with anchor stores such as Parisians and Saks. This is also a very nice area.

Castleton Mall - This mall is located off I-465 and Allisonville Road on the northeast side of Indianapolis. It is a few miles down the road from the Fashion Mall, so you could go to both malls in the same day. It has anchor stores such as J.C. Penney%26#39;s, Sears, L. S. Ayres, and Lazarus.

Greenwood Mall - This mall is located in Greenwood, Indiana off I-65 on the southside of Indianapolis. It has anchors stores such as Sears, J.C. Penney%26#39;s, and Lazarus.

If it were me coming to Indianapolis to shop for the day, I would probably go to the Fashion Mall and the Castleton Mall. It will give you a great variety with all kinds of shopping in between such as Kohl%26#39;s and other stores.

As far as Indianapolis, I have lived here for about five years and I love it. It is not so big that you are overwhelmed, but has plenty to offer. As far as safety, like any city, there are areas that are nicer and safer than others. However, I have never felt unsafe going anywhere in Indianapolis. For an overnight stay, I would suggest downtown, Castleton, Carmel, or Greenwood.

Hope this helps and happy shopping.

Indianapolis

Actually we are now on Eastern Standard Time - same as Central time. Local TV stations delay the network shows to the normal Eastern time.

As far as malls, check out

www.simon.com/find_mall/find.aspx?State=IN

Fashion Mall is the high end mall. On the North Side at Keystone and 465.

YSU -

We normally agree on just about everything (except maybe the critical issue involving the ';Sedan on Demand'; taxi service in Carmel, which I understand to be terrible ...), but our Eastern Standard Time designation makes us one hour ahead of Central Standard Time, and the same as the folks on the east coast.

If that%26#39;s NOT correct, I%26#39;m going to be very early for my 2p PST conference call this afternoon.

Toomany times!! I felllike Bluto on Animal House. Oh well, just as long as I know when the Colts game starts

I think the Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing is the one you were referring to. It has excellent, upscale shopping. There used to be a Parisian there, but it closed. Nordstrom is moving into the Parisian space, but it isn%26#39;t open yet. There%26#39;s also a Saks Fifth Avenue, one of the larger Pottery Barn stores, Crate and Barrel, Wiliams Sonoma, Williams Sonoma Home Store, Restoration Hardware, J Jill, Cole Haan, Tommy Bahama and loads more stores. There are also hotels in the complex as well as a good choice of restaurants.

  • slippery noodle/dinner & dancing!!!

Cant remember, can someone remind me what time early band starts playing in the back area at the Slippery Noodle. Went there last visit and had a great time. Husband %26amp; I want to go dancing there saturday nite and thought we%26#39;d eat dinner there before and get a good table. Any suggestions what to order???

Thanks in advance, looking forward to this weekend, is there a colts game on sunday??? :)

    slippery noodle/dinner %26amp; dancing!!!

Not sure what time the bands start. I think The Noodle has a website though. Haven%26#39;t eaten there but heard it%26#39;s good. Never been on the dancefloor there, just watched, My wife says I%26#39;m the male version of Elaine on Seinfeld. The Colts are in Houston this Sunday

    slippery noodle/dinner %26amp; dancing!!!

If you get there before 6 probably on the weekend no cover charge. Enjoy dinner at a table in the back. Good steaks , sandwiches, salads. The bands usually start aroud 9 I think. Dancing maybe up by the stage its kind of crowded on the weekends. I love that bar and music one of my favorites. Always a good time. The web site also has a calendar of what band is playing. Enjoy

Thanks, just want a heads up. Especially if there was a colts game. Now, I won%26#39;t have to worry about hubby trying to get tickets. But, I will miss the sea of blue %26amp; white on every person in Indy on game day. What a great city!

I%26#39;ll check website for band time, I know we%26#39;ll want to eat there, but, not sure if I want to spend 3 hours before. Want to hit Ike %26amp; Jonesy%26#39;s for a drink before dinner, and then get our hand stamped, to come back later and not have to stand in line at door to pay cover.

Indy definitely has it happening, we love your city, its truly one to be proud of. Thanks again guys, :)

YES IKE%26#39;S!!! Still going strong. It was probably the first ';nightclub'; to get going when Indy started refurbishing the downtown area with Union Station about 24 years ago. Too bad that Union Station didn%26#39;t make it. Does anyone miss Norman%26#39;s?

    Yep.

Union Station served a purpose nonetheless. It really got the ball rolling with area residents viewing downtown as an evening/weekend destination once again. I suspect it will emerge once again in some grand form - at least I hope so.

    ND weekend lodging

My husband and I and our 2 college age kids have tickets for the NC game and are looking for lodging for Nov. 3-4. We have stayed in Niles in the past at the Niles Inn but it was pretty bad and pretty high. We know we will have to stay outside of South Bend; we are willing to try a Mom %26amp; Pop motel but don%26#39;t know a thing about any of them. We don%26#39;t need any extras as all we do is sleep in the room but it needs to be clean! Any suggestions within a 20-30 miles radius of campus? appreciate any help you can give.

    ND weekend lodging

I look to those ';lists'; websites with people%26#39;s names in them. If you look under temporary lodging you can find something.

    ND weekend lodging

Their are reputable mid tier chain hotels like Hampton Inn, Courtyard, Fairfield, Holiday Inn Express in cities and towns surrounding South Bend. Try looking for hotels in Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth, Laporte, Michigan City, Warsaw (about 40 miles). You might also get fortunate with an Amish Bed and Breakfast by looking up Nappanee or Shipshewana.

    Inexpensive Thrill in Madison

While visiting my twin daughters yesterday at Hanover college, we drove over to Madison for lunch. After eating. we were heading back to the college when we passed a sign by the airport advertising aiplane rides for $12 a person. It was my twins birthday and they had never been in a plane before, so they were excited about thying it. The ride was in a small 4 seat place but the experience was awesome. After takeoff we headed southwest over the college then went across the Ohio river and followed it back north over Madison. The view of the river was breathtaking. Theye was a riverboat docked and we got an amazing view of the bridge going to Kentucky. Right before landing we flew over Cliffty Falls State Park and got a close-up view of the falls. The trip only lasted 15 minutes but it sure felt much longer. I recommend it highly and my daughters went back to college and told their friends. I think a big group of them are going back next weekend to do it again.

    Inexpensive Thrill in Madison

That sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks for telling us about it!

    questions about Columbus, Fort Wayne

I%26#39;ve heard about the great architecture in Columbus, and I may be able to see some of it next month. I%26#39;d appreciate any recommendations for dining and historical sites in the city and surrounding area.

I will also be going through Fort Wayne. Are there any must-sees in the area for history buffs? The transportation museums in DeKalb County look interesting.

    Thanks in advance.

    questions about Columbus, Fort Wayne

You might want to stop by the fort in Fort Wayne, and I%26#39;ve heard very good things about the Lincoln Museum. www.thelincolnmuseum.org

    www.visitfortwayne.com

Not far from Columbus is Nashville in Brown County, Indiana. It is very popular in the fall. It%26#39;s a great place to see the changing leaves, as well as see the work of local artists, listen to music, etc.

    Have a great trip!

    questions about Columbus, Fort Wayne

    Hi madi40,

    Columbus and surrounding area:

I lived in Columbus, Indiana, for a few months and found the architecture amazing. I am not an artsy person, but I would definitely recomend this city to anyone in the area

You might want to go on the architecture tour:

    www.columbus.in.us//static/index.cfm…

Sorry I can%26#39;t recommend any restaurants there.

I agree with the above post, I would also check out Brown County. It is wonderful in the fall with the leaves changing colors. You can also walk around the shops and see the artisans. There are some nice little restaurants here.

    http://www.browncounty.com/

You might want to also continue on to Bloomington, Indiana, and check out the IU campus. There always seems to be something going on there. Some ideas would be to take a tour of the campus (see the architecture), go to the campus art museum, go to the archeology building and tour the museum there, they offer various concerts, ect. If you decide to visit here, but not sure what to see, just ask and I will try to help (I graduated from here), or I%26#39;m sure some others on this site could help.

    http://www.iub.edu/tour/

    Ft.Wayne, Indiana:

Yes, I agree, I think as a history buff you would like the Lincoln Museum.

    http://www.thelincolnmuseum.org/

    Maybe the Historical Society

    www.fwhistorycenter.com/about_contact.htm

Don%26#39;t know if you like plants, but maybe the Foellinger-Freimann botanical conservatory?

    http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/

With your mention of history, you might like something associated with the Amish.

  • Rehearsal Dinner

My son will be getting married in Huntingburg, IN next summer. The reception will be in Jasper. Can anyone suggest a nice restaurant in the area for the rehearsal dinner? Much thanks!

    Rehearsal Dinner

The Schnitzelbaunk, is a tradtional German restaurant that%26#39;s pretty popular to hold a rehersal dinner. There%26#39;s also the Mill House, which has a room for private parties and would be comparable to like a Chili%26#39;s or such.

    Rehearsal Dinner

narm7773, thanks for the info. I knew that Schnitzelbank Restaurant has a separate room for parties, but I didn%26#39;t know the Mill House had one. Any thoughts on Snap%26#39;s Steak House?

I asked my friend about Snap%26#39;s. She said it%26#39;s typical bar type food but pretty pricey. She also said it%26#39;s small and they may not rent it out for a private party. She also said that the Jasper Inn is renovating their restaurant and the catering will be from Sander%26#39;s which is excellant. Other than that, we couldn%26#39;t come up with anything else.

Thanks for the input. I think I will plan a road trip to Jasper and check out the restaurants now that I know they are good options.

I would definitely have to recommend the Schnitz. The Mill House would be good too though. I can%26#39;t really think of anywhere else there that would work well. I agree that Snap%26#39;s is pricey for the type of food you would be getting. There wouldn%26#39;t be anywhere in Huntingburg that would really work well other than maybe the back room at the Gaslight. Your food options there would be pizza, nachos, strombolis (a personal favorite there), or burgers. I guess it really just depends if you are wanting something light and laid back or a little more elegant.

You might check the new Community Center that is in Huntingburg. They have a list of caterers you could chose from.

Mill House food isn%26#39;t quite what it was yrs ago, but still great. Last couple of times I%26#39;ve had Schnitzelbank catering it was terrible which is quite unlike them. Sander%26#39;s Catering has great food and from what I hear around town it is a lot more affordable than other options.

Snap%26#39;s Steakhouse does NOT have typicaly bar-type food. They are a steak house and though it%26#39;s been several months since we%26#39;ve dined there, the steaks are out of this world with their herb butter. They have an outside patio that might be able to be reserved.

The new Huntinburg convention center just opened but I%26#39;ve not been there yet.

FYI Sander%26#39;s now runs the restaurant area of the Jasper Inn (formerly Holiday Inn).

It%26#39;s kind of strange, but Fazoli%26#39;s also does catering...not typical rehearsal dinner fare.

This may sound crazy, but my rehearsal dinner was at the local bowling alley. They have a VERY nice room (far better than I had thought) and we had Sander%26#39;s cater the meal. We purchased the alcohol from the bar there and then after the meal, we paid for our guests to bowl. It was a fun evening and a great way to enjoy time with our wedding party and out of town guests.

  • In for Friday night only

Hi, The hubby and I will be arriving around 5:00 and staying at the Westin downtown on Friday, then leaving the next day. Since we%26#39;re there for such a short time, do you have any suggestions as to what we should do and see? Any recommendations for dinner? And are there any microbrewies downtown? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

    In for Friday night only

There%26#39;s the Alcatraz Brewing Company and the Rock Bottom Brewery, both are downtown within walking distance from the Westin.

As for dinner, Palamino is very good.

    http://www.palomino.com/

    http://www.alcatrazbrewing.com/

    rockbottom.com/RockBottomWeb/RBR/Home.aspx

    In for Friday night only

The above mentions are good choices. For seafood try the Oceanaire. Just wander up and down Illinois and Meridan St and you%26#39;ll find places. An upscale bar/lounge is 7, which is on south Meridian. Maybe some celebs there later on. Expect to pay about $7 for a beer there. It should be a fun atmosphere this weekend. The Colts are in town Sunday. There may be a ';pep rally'; somewhere downtown (maybe on The Circle or Pan Am Plaza) about the time you come into town. You might also wander down south of The RCA Dome. There will probably be some early tailgaters. Have fun, enjoy Indy

Thanks for the suggestions; my husband will be extremely happy that we%26#39;ll pass a brewery or two along our wanderings! We both love walking around, I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll have a great time. Thx again.

If you don%26#39;t make it to the micro%26#39;s and are somewhere else ask if they have anything from The Oaken Barrel Brewery (it%26#39;s a micro on the far southside) Ask for Pale Ale or my favorite Razz Wheat

Agree with the above. If you%26#39;re looking for locally owned and operated restaurants, here are a few:

many on Mass. Avenue, including: Elements, The Scholar%26#39;s Inn, Agio%26#39;s (all three ';fine dining'; type establishments

a little bit southeast of town: Dunaways (also fine dining, with a wonderful terrace, if the weather%26#39;s nice), and the Milano Inn (intermediate, but hearty Italian eatery).

downtown: St. Elmo%26#39;s or Harry %26amp; Izzy%26#39;s (landmark Indy steak house and it%26#39;s nearby and brand new sibling - pretty expensive) and MANY pub type places.

Ram Restaurant and Big Horn Brewery is another downtown brewpub on Illinois St. opposite Circle Center. A fun locally owned option downtown for dinner or drinks is Barcelona on N. Delaware, Spanish-style tapas bar - either munch a few appetizers or get a whole meal. Another family owned Italian place southeast of downtown is Iaria%26#39;s on S. College, a much better option than Milano Inn IMO. Two brewpubs are north of downtown in Broad Ripple: Broad Ripple Brew Pub and my favorite, Brugge Brewery, with Belgian style-beers and food (the steamed mussels are the best).

Thank you all for your help and great ideas. We%26#39;ll definitely be kept busy and enjoy ourselves.

    Indiana or Ohio???

We%26#39;ve been to Lancaster, PA and wasn%26#39; t impressed. The farms were beautiful and all but the people weren%26#39;t friendly. We%26#39;ve been to Ohio the past couple years and we love it there. We%26#39;re planning another trip in May. The question is, should we go to Indiana or stick with Ohio. We live in N.C. so it would be a longer trip to go to Indiana so we were wondering if it would be worth it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Indiana or Ohio???

What is it you%26#39;re looking to do exactly? There%26#39;s a lot to do in Indiana, but a lot of it is spread out. Are you going to stay in one spot or travel the state?

    Indiana or Ohio???

In my opinion, stick to Ohio. Scenery much more appealing, hilly farmland as opposed to the flat flat Indiana. We visited Shipshewana once a few years back, it was okay, but nothing spectacular. We never went back, although we are considering doing so this fall, and also visiting the new casino (Four Winds) in Michigan, about 75 miles from there. Indiana is okay, but on a scale of 1 to 10, with Ohio being 9, Lancaster being 7, I would rate Shipshewana a 5. Lancaster had a lot to see, but I thought the food much much better in Ohio restaurants. Any die-hard Shipshewana fans out there? Perhaps we missed something when we where there. I would appreciate any feedback since we are going to give it another try in a couple months. thanks!

Southern Indiana is not the ';flat flat'; you encounter up in the North half. But you won%26#39;t find mountains either. You have to be a ';Shipshewana Person'; to enjoy it. Flea markets and Amish cookin%26#39;. We all have different tastes.

If you didn%26#39;t like it, stomp on the gas to get to Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, MI. The 2nd largest gaming area outside of Las Vegas. Plop down $18 for a buffet, or $42 for a steak. Gamblers often venture a scant 10 miles further West for the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, IN, currently the largest floating casino in the US. Have a good trip.

    Thanks, go!

I%26#39;ve been to southern Indiana, as my daughter lived in Cincinnati for years... traveled to the river boats down there many times, Argosy, Rising Sun, Belterra... so... Blue Chip is much bigger than these? Sounds good. We%26#39;ll take a drive to Nappannee (spelling?) also. We like to just poke around and explore as long as gambling opportunity is not too far away! I remember a really good family restaurant called the ';5 and 20'; (I think I%26#39;m remembering that right) at the intersection of those 2 routes. Hope it%26#39;s still there. (We headed west on Rt. 20 from Ohio and stayed on that route all the way to Indiana last time.)

US 20 is a nice (flat!) drive, right into Michigan City. Also connecting to Michigan M-39, is about 6 miles from Four Winds. But once you%26#39;re in New Buffalo, you%26#39;re at the entrance to I-94, providing a speedy 10 minutes to Michigan City.

Sounds like you%26#39;re unaware of the NW Indiana Casinos? There are 5 of them in a 35 mile span on the Lake Michigan shore. The new Blue Chip, built in %26#39;06, is the largest US boat (or now, barge). A tempting area for you. Maybe that trip will be extended a few days? Sorry we hijacked this topic from people who may not be interested in casinos.

    go...

yes, ';unaware'; is exactly right... ha!

    6 more? oh nooooo

could you give me a couple of names to steer me in the right direction? thanks!

in re-reading your message, I guess I should have said 5 more..

    ONLY 5? :)

ONLY 5 CASINOS??? That%26#39;s NW Indiana. You added nearby New Buffalo to get the 6. But quite a few in a short span. Bye bye Shipshewana. Hop on the Indiana toll road for speedy travel, which has an exit on M-39, about 8 miles south of Four Winds in New Buffalo (Michigan). Do a T-A ';Four Winds'; search, I just posted an update there too.

Just 10 miles West is Michigan City, Indiana, and the Blue Chip Casino. US Hwy 12 out of New Buffalo will take you directly to the Blue Chip entrance, on the eastern edge of Michigan City.

Let%26#39;s use Michigan City as the reference point. On the south end of town is I-94, your quick travel road. Head WEST for about 30 miles to Gary, to find the Majestic Star I %26amp; II casinos. This is 2 boats, side by side, in Buffington Harbor. The I-94 exit is Cline Ave North, then weasel around to the harbor entrance. About 42 minutes from MC to the Star garage.

2 casinos here not enough? From the Star garage, get back on Cline Ave for a 3 minute drive to Resorts Casino garage! I think Resorts is now an Ameristar property. Resorts crosses the line, and is deemed an East Chicago, Indiana Casino.

Still hot? Head yet further West about 8 miles to Hammond, Indiana, and the Harrah%26#39;s Horseshoe Casino. This one is the most difficult to access, so watch your driving. You would be early, but Harrah%26#39;s has joined the bandwagon, and is currently building a new mega-mega barge casino, to open in 2008. Darn close to Four Winds in size, and it FLOATS (Indiana rule).

Casino people are welcome to look at casino info. Here%26#39;s a place that%26#39;s free to read, and also free to join in. NW Indiana, and some of your other Southern favorites too.

    …ezboard.com/Illinois-and-Indiana-Casinos/fc…

You%26#39;ll also find trip reports posted, but here%26#39;s the link to that page.

    http://p102.ezboard.com/fcasinosonefrm10

Glad I responded to your brief comment on Four Winds, and hope this helps a bit. If you care to talk more, let%26#39;s flip over to the TA Four Winds (New Buffalo) board, or the other casino board, which I think you%26#39;ll like to participate.

And good luck on your upcoming adventure.

    Cheap nice motel...

Just need an economical choice for one night in Lafayette or close by...can any one tell me which hotel in Lafayette would be the best choice ?

    Cheap nice motel...

I don%26#39;t know exactly when you%26#39;re arriving, but we have always had good luck staying at the Purdue Memorial Union hotel on the University campus. It isn%26#39;t that cheap, but if you%26#39;re doing anything on campus, it is nice, and comfortable and clean, with good access to inexpensive restaurants and coffee houses. I think it runs ~ 80 per night on regular nights (probably more on game weekends or graduation).

I recommend avoiding the Holiday Inn downtown. It was very expensive (~$150/night), with an odd layout and really uncomfortable beds. Our room was also not very clean.

    Hope this helps.

Where to stay in Terre Haute

    Hi,

I%26#39;d like some advice as to where to stay in Terre Haute. This is a one night pass through on our way to Michigan. We would like something close to I-70, with breakfast, comfortable beds and good value. 2 adults and two kids. Any hotel suggestions?

    Thanks!

Where to stay in Terre Haute

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in March, and I would recommend it. It is right off I-70 and has a free breakfast. We weren%26#39;t really in the hotel that long since we checked in after 11 pm and were gone by 9 am, but it was nice to sleep in a clean, comfortable room. The breakfast was decent, the same as every other Hampton. We paid a total of $94, including tax. We stayed at the Terre Haute Ramada Inn 3 years ago, and the Hampton was much nicer. Have a good trip!

Where to stay in Terre Haute

We stayed in the Econolodge in TH; never again. We walked in to the small lobby area, staff was eating in there (2 pm in afternoon), using the counter for food. One of the staff was sprawled out in a chair, looked pretty put-out when I had to step over him to get to the desk. This place needs a good managerial shake-up. The price was too high for the room. After one night, we left and went from the frying pan into the fire... the Ramada Express. There, the desk staff was not dressed for success, overheard (tiny area) a guest saying that their room was dirty and light bulbs were missing. Staffer told guest the person with access to light bulbs was not on duty. Two other couples looking for lodging, after hearing the complaints at the desk left to look for other places to stay. Another said they could not get the free internet access to work. I also could receive only a weak internet signal, not useable. Told the clerk, she said she didn%26#39;t know anything about it. Internet guy not on duty. Next day, internet still unuseable. Had to go to office on the second day as the maid had not left fresh towels. I pity anyone having to use the pitiful lodging in Terre Haute. High prices, surly staff, NO MANAGEMENT, and a ';If you don%26#39;t like it here, try someplace else'; attitude. Why doesn%26#39;t the Chamber of Commerce jack these motels up to at least a mediocre level of service. We have stayed/suffered in TH for the last 7 years while on vacation; NEVER AGAIN. We will drive 60 miles to Effingham, Illinois to a very nice Holiday Inn Express. (I DO NOT work for Holiday Inn Express, am retired from aerospace). I will gladly stay in Terre Haute if they shape up. Any others with lodging problems in TH?

I know this topic is old, but to respond to the last person that replied. Just because 1 hotel was bad, doesn%26#39;t mean ALL the hotels are bad in Terre Haute.

Anyone know any good budget options for Indianapolis (downtown-safe, basic, etc).

budget options for downtown Indianapolis ??

not sure of any ';budget'; options downtown. You might try The Brickyard Crossing at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Or The Red Roof Inn or Motel 6 on the westside. It is easy to catch the bus to downtown and there are plenty of places to eat around there. Around the Hostel there is nothing close and probably not the best area to walk around at night. When are you coming to Indy? I%26#39;m sure I can arrange some free transportation to and from downtown

budget options for downtown Indianapolis ??

Just did hotwire, %26amp; got downtown area 3.5 star hotel for $55.00 plus taxes. Great deal. We got the Sheraton. Right in downtown area, walk to all restaurants and dinning and slippery noodle for dancing.

Good luck, we do this periodically, just for an overnite for myself and the hubby. Theres so much to do in indy, just walking to circle monument and going to the museum underneath, its a great thing to do. We love Indy, Plus, theres another monument within walking distance and that one also has a museum underneath.

    Have fun. :)

    Thank you.

the Hostel area is in a bad area, or just desolate? Perhaps in Dec or Jan if I can get the days off, etc free transportation would help Thank you so much.

    Great deal indeed!

This website might help you as you try to decide if you%26#39;d feel safe in an area. You can just input the street address for the hostel or hotel that you%26#39;re considering and get information plotted on a map of incidents in the surrounding area.

Since you%26#39;ll be coming in the middle of winter, it does get dark very early so keep that in mind when you consider the bike paths and walking through various neighborhoods.

2 married, childhood friends wanna party in Indy

If you want to be downtown, maybe do the priceline.com thing with 4 star hotels. I%26#39;m not sure what your idea of cheap is, but Priceline (using the name-your-price feature) can produce some top hotels at $100 per night or so (Westin, or the Omni - probably not the Conrad or the Cantebury).

I%26#39;m not sure what%26#39;s in town, but one of the downtown Marriott Courtyards might be a good bet too - one is on the canal walk and an easy walk to the bars/clubs of downtown.

2 married, childhood friends wanna party in Indy

There is a Hampton Inn downtown Indy, great location for shopping, partying etc.

thanks for the idea. Has anyone tried Priceline before?? I%26#39;m a little scared that I won%26#39;t get what I want and we won%26#39;t be happy

I use it for Chicago and Seattle all the time. There is a little risk, very little with the 4-star option checked, in my opinion (and experience). But I certainly understand the apprehension - and still feel it every once in awhile just before I click the button.

I WILL say that I used to get outstanding Chicago hotels for $70 or $80/night - but lately have been getting them for about $120 (over the last six months). Seattle still gets exceptionally great deals.

Only once have I been placed into a hotel with which I wasn%26#39;t satisfied (the Millenium Knickerbocker in Chicago - last winter). But I%26#39;ve never done it for Indy either ...

I%26#39;ve used Priceline twice. Once for airfare and once for a hotel in Chicago. For the air I think you can find a great price just about anywhere. We got a room for the Air and Water Show for about 40 percent off the going rate, which I thought was great since there was a big event in town. Had no problems at alll

Don%26#39;t be afraid of Priceline! Unless it%26#39;s a big athletic or convention weekend (don%26#39;t think that weekend is) the Hyatt or Westin downtown can usually be had for about $70/night.

A good site to review and learn about Priceline and strategies etc. is: p070.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding

We used hotwire: put 4star hotel downtown indianapolis and got omni, we were very happy%26gt; then another time we again put 4star hotel downtown indianapolis and got University place %26amp; Conference Center, nice hotel, but too far to walk to all the fun. We had a hard time finding a cab and ended up walking all the way back to this hotel. Scared me from trying a 4star downtown indy hotel again.

So, in October, we tried 3.5star downtown indianapolis and got the sheraton. super cheap, it was the old Radisson by Circle Monument, right in the middle of everything. This was perfect for us. I was hoping the Crowne Plaza, being that is right by slippery noodle and dancing. but, it was all good. We were totally happy. Let us know what you do. Its a risk, but, if you do get the University Place and Conference Center, just be sure you take cab companys phone number, so you can call and get ride back to your hotel.

Good Luck, Indy%26#39;s great friendly city, we love it!!!!

That%26#39;s good feedback. And I agree, the University Place Hotel %26amp; Conference Center SHOULDN%26#39;T be included as a downtown hotel.

I hope you left such feedback for Priceline. I know we did after getting the Millenium Knickerbocker in Chicago one time (no way it%26#39;s a 4 star hotel). I%26#39;d say the same about the University Place Hotel - not a 4 star hotel either, although a very nice, servicable option for staying in Indy if you don%26#39;t want to be right downtown (say, staying here for the 500 - or a conference at the hotel).

We were in Indy the weekend of Sept. 28th and stayed at the Westin downtown. We paid $75.00/night through Hotwire for a kingsize room.

I was a bit apprehensive because of the mixed reviews of this hotel. Glad to say we had a good experience; nice room, good service and friendly staff. My only complaint would be the $23.00 self parking (no in/out privileges). I was told to look for meter parking (free after 6:00 p.m. and on weekends), but unfortunately, there was a game that weekend and no street parking was to be found.

We had a great time and were impressed how friendly everyone was and how busy downtown is at night. What a great place!

The ONLY hotels in downtown Indianapolis classified by Priceline are: The Hyatt, The Westin, and The Omni, which are all fine, convenient to everything hotels. If you bid for a four star hotel in downtown Indy (on Priceline)--you have NO chance of getting anything other than one of the above.

There are seven Priceline zones in Indy metro area. None of the other zones have any 4 star hotels--thus if you follow strategies outlined in the link above you can start very low--say $45 %26amp; have six immediate free rebids working your way up at say $5 a bid. If that doesn%26#39;t work wait 24 hours and start again $5 higher.

I%26#39;m not a Priceline shill--but I do think it%26#39;s the greatest thing for budget minded travelers who seek luxury accomodations--since sliced bread! Just remember--NO REFUNDS--but trip insurance is available.

  • Anyone been to West Baden Springs Hotel?

Has anyone stayed at West Baden Springs Hotel down at French Lick? We are looking for a luxurious hotel to stay at not too far from our home in Carmel. (Yes, we want to get out of Indy so that the kids can%26#39;t track us down every second! LOL). I called and was given pretty good rates for either a ';countryside view'; or an ';atrium/no balcony

    view'; Any recommendations?

    Thanks!!

Anyone been to West Baden Springs Hotel?

    Hi..

I have not stayed at West Baden, I usually stay at French Lick

because the rates are more resonable for me. BUT, I have

been to West Baden, and I do plan to stay there sometime,

just for the fun of it. It has been beautifully restored and

probably is the more quiet of the two hotels. I would

definately do the atrium view because it is so awesome

at night! It is a very unique place to stay. I have not

tried out the restaurants, as I enjoy French Lick quite

    well.

Just got back from a sister%26#39;s weekend at West Baden Springs. It was outstanding. The restoration was beautifully done, and the facilities certainly qualify as luxurious. The spa was great, and they have a wide range of services. Most of us went for massages (started at $120 for a Swedish). There are both indoor and outdoor pools, and an indoor whirlpool, with a bar/snack bar handy. There is a large veranda with chairs and rockers overlooking the gardens that was a great peaceful place to relax and chat.

SInclair%26#39;s Restaurant was excellent for dinner but pretty pricy (well, maybe not by Marion/Hamilton County standards - most entrees were $30 or more), and it has an exceptional wine list for the area. Breakfast at Sinclair%26#39;s Cafe was very good. It also serves lunch.

There is a shuttle that runs every 15 minutes over to the French Lick Springs Resort and the casino (a mile or so). At French Lick is a Steakhouse that looked like it would be good, and there%26#39;s a cafe and a buffet at the casino. There is also a spa at French Lick.

The restoration at French Lick was also done with the same attention to detail, and the lobby area is quite ornate. Didn%26#39;t see the rooms to be able to compare, but I think they are not as high as the rooms at West Baden.

My wife and I decided to drive down one Sunday afternoon to gamble a little and check out the West Baden. We didn%26#39;t stay but the place looked great. The gardens were beautiful. The drive down there was pretty easy. We took State Road 37 the whole way. Once you get south of Southport Road the traffic is fine although there are a lot of stoplights thru Bloomington. It took us right about two hours from Indy%26#39;s westside. One of these days we plan on staying. By the way, I did win $3.00!!!!

My wife and I enjoyed a one-night stay at West Baden on Wednesday of this week (September 19th) and were absolutely thrilled with place - the restoration, the attention to detail, the service, and the entire atmosphere. A class act, all the way. We hope to make it an annual event.

Go ahead and get the balcony view. My husband and I spent October 3-4 there with an atrium view with balcony, and it is fabulous. If you are looking for luxury, the West Baden Springs Hotel is definitely the way to go. We enjoyed the room, the view, the gorgeous historic hotel and amenities including the indoor and outdoor pools and hot tub.

Spent the night of October 8, 2007 at West Baden Hotel. It was amazing. We chose the atrium view and was very pleased. I think the rooms with the grounds view would possibly be pretty also, but we were glad we chose the atrium view. It was our first visit so we did not get the room with a balcony as I thought we wouldn%26#39;t be in our room except to sleep. Next time we go, we will get the balcony. It was amazing to watch the light change colors at night. Very awesome place. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The grounds were beautiful, even the view of the hotel from the parking lot was great. We aren%26#39;t big on gambling, but did go visit French Lick Hotel. Should have taken the tour, but we were just so awestruck over West Baden, we spent most of our time just roaming the building and the grounds. On our way out of town, we crossed the street to the French Lick Winery. Had a very nice lunch and enjoyed the wine tasting and gift shop. The town of French Lick wasn%26#39;t too much to see, but was told alot of big businesses were going to come in. I would rather see it stay more of a small town type atmosphere. Only cheaper places to eat was a Dairy Queen and Sonic, no MacDonald%26#39;s. All in all, I wish I was rich so I could spend alot more time there.

    Metamora Inn

I am staying at the bed and breakfast Metamora Inn In Metamora Indiana. Has anyone stayed there? We will be there June 1st and 2nd. I will write a review of it when I return.

    Metamora Inn

My GS and I stayed at the Metamora Inn the first of August. I had never been to Metamora before and needed a room with 2 beds and a TV. It was a last minute idea to go and all the other rooms with 2 beds were booked. We stayed in the Sonshine Room. It is very ';girly'; with rose wallpaper and white wicker furniture, but my GS didn%26#39;t seem to mind too much! Since my GS was with me, I would have chosen a room not quite so ';girly';, but it was a lovely room. I was very pleased with it. The room was very clean and attractive and Jo was very pleasant. The breakfast was also very good. We enjoyed the canal boat ride, the train ride, the grist mill and shops very much. All the shops and train and canal rides shut down at 5 PM but it was very relaxing to sit on porch and enjoy the evening. I also went for a walk that evening through the town and along the canal and it was very nice. East of the town is a restaurant where a scene from RAINMAN was shot. There%26#39;s a big sign on the cabin stating Rainman Cabin. I hear that Metamora is lovely around Christmas time also, and would like a return visit. I will definately book at the Metamora Inn.

Notre Dame football experience - first time

My wife surprised me and got me (2) tickets to the Boston college game and a nights stay in nearby Shipshewana.

I have always wanted to go to a game and now I get to live that dream.

I need help to maximize this experience. How early should you arrive, where is the best place to park?

Someone I work with said that there is some kind of pregame ritual where you can go and the players come out and walk to the stadium, where does this take place at?

Post game, I would assume that all places to eat will be packed, any ideas on a place that is nice but won%26#39;t be packed?

I want to make this enjoyable for my wife also.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

My husband and I are attending the same game...and it is our first ND experience as well. We got a gret book through Amazon.com. You relly don%26#39;t have much time, but if you can get your hands on NOTRE DAME GAME DAY, Getting there, Getting In, and Getting in the Spirit by Todd Tucker (a ND alum) all your your questions will be answered. It is a great book with all kinds of insider tips.

So can you tell me some of the highlights of the book? I guess my biggest concerns are getting in, finding reasonable parking and then also getting back out.

Also, what is the tradition of the players and the cathedral prior to the game?

I%26#39;m very interested in any tips from anyone either.

  • Best Delivery Pizza in Downtown?

    Hi All

I am staying at two places downtown; during the week I%26#39;ll be at the Marriott and for the weekend I%26#39;ll be at University Place. Can someone give recommendation for the best pizza that can be delivered to those places? Or, is there something within walking distance that can be carried out? We are partial to Chicago deep dish style but have also enjoyed very well prepared thin crust.

    Thanks!

    Best Delivery Pizza in Downtown?

I was hoping someone else might know the answer to your question. I%26#39;ve never had pizza delivered downtown, so can%26#39;t really comment. Plus, I%26#39;m not a Chicago-style fan and don%26#39;t know which pizzeria is best for that here in Indy.

Having said all that ... My favorite pizzeria in Indy is Bazbeaux%26#39;s - they have a restaurant on Mass Avenue. They occasionally produce a thick crust pizza (but not Chicago style), but are known for their Roman style pizza - with the thin flavorful crust with traditional and ';gourmet'; toppings. I don%26#39;t even know if they deliver (I%26#39;m thinking they don%26#39;t, but I%26#39;ve seen guys on bicycles carrying their boxes around downtown at lunch, so ...). Theirs is the closes thing to the pizza we were served in Florence and in Rome that I%26#39;ve experienced here in the midwest. Very good pizza.

    Best Delivery Pizza in Downtown?

Good pizza and Indianapolis are foreign concepts for the most part. I do like Bazbeaux%26#39;s. Most of the downtown pizza is really bad. You might ask at the hotels - but working downtown I really do not find much good pizza.

Not sure myself about pizza in the downtown area. If you are able to drive, try going to Union Jack%26#39;s in Speedway. From Meridian Streeet go north to 16th. Go west about 3 and half miles past The Indianapolis Motor Speedway to Crawfordsville Road. Angle right turn about another 2-3 miles and it will be on the right next to a Hardees. Look for the sign with the car on top of it

    Mmmmm....Papa John%26#39;s....

Oh definitely Union Jacks. Don%26#39;t they still have a location in Broadripple?

    Yes, still one in BR

Agree, Union Jacks is MUCH closer to a Chicago Style pizza.

Bazbeaux is a good choice on Massachusetts Ave. and they deliver. Girogio%26#39;s has good pizza by the slice - they are on East Market St. just east of Monumenrt Circle, but doubt they deliver (worth a call though).

Union Jacks, hands down the best pizza in Indy

    Girlfriend's Getaway

Can anyone suggest lodging for 3 50something women wanting to spend a few days relaxing in Nashville, Indiana. We would like something where we could all stay in one room, possibly with a sitting area to visit. Also, what types of shops are in Nashville? Are they more art and antiques or more craft/flea market types?

    Girlfriend's Getaway

I would highly recommend The Cornerstone Inn in downtown Nashville!! It is the most relaxing place and is a favorite get-away. You can park your car and never drive the rest of the time if you do not want. Each room is furnished with beautiful antiques and the rooms are very sound proof and quiet. There is a Gathering Room in the basement where a full breakfast is served each morning and what a treat it is!!! Always two hot dishes, three homemade bakery items, cereal, muffins, fresh fruit, juices, coffee, teas and more. There is a snack that is put out each afternoon, and a wonderful dessert in the evening. On the second floor is a covered porch with rockers where you can sit and watch out over the town. There are all kinds of shops in Nashville. Most are very quaint with some local artisan. Some of our favorites are the Trilogy Gallery, Quintesence, Lawrence Family Glass Blowers, The Bartley House, but there are many others. It is a charming town where you can browse up and down the streets taking your time as you go. There are restaurants right in town that you can walk to as well. The Cornerstone Inn has a website that shows all of the rooms. We started going their 16 years ago for our anniversary and have been going every year since. We see some of the same people each year. I bet if you go there once it will become an annual event for you!!

    Girlfriend's Getaway

My friends are planning on going this fall as well and we are looking for a cabin of some sort if any one has any info please let me know! we are looking for one with a hot tub and possibly a pool table! thanks!

My girlfriends and I have been going to Nashville every fall for the past 20 years. Great week away from responsibility!!! We usually rent from Hill%26#39;s O%26#39; Brown vacation homes and also have rented from McGinley vacation cabins amny times. They do not keep up the rentals as well as Hill%26#39;s O%26#39; Brown and Hill%26#39;s has LOTS of rentals from small and not too expensive to large and expensive. The one thing you will find is that everyone charges for anything over 2 people per cabin. October is VERY crowded even during the week, but weekends it%26#39;s hip to hip!!! Hotel Nashville is also a good place to stay in town if you want. Most are 2 room suites with 2 baths snd full kitchen, you just have to make sure you ask for the kitchen package when you make reservations. They have jacuzzi suites also, swimming pool and restaurant and all rooms have balconies.

The shops change every few years, sometimes there are more crafts and other times more are and antiques. There is also a really nice stained glass shop. There are more antique shops in Morgantown, rt. 135 north out of Nashville, about 15-20 minutes away.

For a wonderful luxury log cabin vacation try Adventurewood Log Cabin just a few miles out of Nashville at www.adventurewoodlogcabin.com It is perfect for family or friends getaways. It%26#39;s a brand new privately owned luxury log cabin and sets on 7 private acres with 3 bdrms, private Hot tub on screened porch, pool table, huge stone wood burning fireplace in great room. The Master Suite is gorgeous with a private balcony and it%26#39;s own see-thru fireplace to enjoy while in bed or in the romantic 2 person Jacuzzi. It%26#39;s really popular for the ';girl%26#39;s getaways'; and anniversarys.

    Family Vacation Ideas

We are a couple in our sixties who take a one week vacation with our 2 adult children, their spouses and 5 children every June. It is early to start planning for next year, but we are starting to think about it and would love some suggestions. In June the kids%26#39; ages will be as follows: boys 12 and 5, girls 10, 7 and 3. We always rent a good sized house so we can stay together. We like to be have a pool or beach readily accessible and we like an area with restaurants and some activities the kids enjoy such as water parks, amusement parks, playgrounds etc. nearby. We don%26#39;t need to be super close to those things, just a reasonable distance. We are not boaters but some of us enjoy fishing from the shore, but that is not a requirement. We live in the Chicago area and would prefer something within one day%26#39;s travel, but we could go a little further and split the driving into 2 days. We have been to spots in WI that we liked, but now we have to go in early June, so we hesitate to go north because the weather and water temp might be too cold. We have been to Lake of the Ozarks, which we enjoyed and this summer we went to Lake Cumberland, KY, which we thought was a little too quiet and remote, though beautiful. We would like to try something new. Any ideas?

    Family Vacation Ideas

Have you thought about southwestern Indiana? Santa Claus has the family theme park Holiday World, which has a waterpark inside the main park. Also French Lick is within an hour%26#39;s drive. The hotel there and at West Baden has just been renovated. There is also a casino there. The Patoka Lake is a beautiful place in the area also if you want to enjoy nature. Ferdinand and St. Meinrad are two beautiful small towns with great European influence, especially the religious communities%26#39; buildings. Evansville has a great river front. They opened a new children%26#39;s museum there, although I have not been there. I live in Ferdinand and I would be willing to help you find any information about this part of the state if you would like.

    Family Vacation Ideas

    Thanks, we%26#39;ll look into that.

The previous poster had very good suggestions!

Since you like amusement parks, here are two other suggestions that are very close to Indiana:

    Cincinnati, Ohio

There%26#39;s King%26#39;s Island which has nice roller coasters and a new Nickelodean section, ';The Beach'; Water Park, Coney Island, the Cincinnati Museum Center (which currently has an exhibit of a real pirate ship, but I don%26#39;t know if that will be there in a year), riverboats, Newport Aquarium which is ranked #1 in the Midwest, one of the top zoos in the country, lots of free outdoor concerts and acitivities down by the river, baseball games, fantastic ice cream, and friendly people.

    http://www.ohioslargestplayground.com/

    www.cincinnatiusa.com

    Sandusky, Ohio by Lake Erie

    ';Cedar Point--The Roller Coaster Capital of the World';

With 69 rides, including 17 world-class roller coasters, four children’s areas, a gigantic waterpark (Soak City), three resort hotels, a year-round indoor waterpark resort, a luxury RV campground with cottages and cabins, two marinas, an entertainment complex (Challenge Park), award-winning live entertainment, gift shops, restaurants and more, it’s

easy to see why Cedar Point amusement park/resort in Sandusky, Ohio, has been voted the “Best Amusement Park in the World” for a record nine consecutive years!

    http://www.sanduskyohiocedarpoint.com/

    http://www.cedarpoint.com/

If you consider a ';reasonable distance'; to be an hour or less and you like to be in a natural setting, you might want to stay near Brookville, Indiana on Brookville Lake. It%26#39;s only 51 minutes from Brookville to downtown Cincinnati and a little over an hour to King%26#39;s Island.

One year we stayed near a lake in Warren County across from the pioneer village. I liked the fact that there was a lot to do, but the area was very busy when we were there. I like the relaxing setting of the rolling farmland leading to the wooded hills surrounding Brookville Lake. You can rent cabins and also go horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, etc. at the state park there.

Thanks for the suggestions. My daughter-in-law%26#39;s family has a place near Sandusky, so we have been there and we probably went want to head someplace warmer in early June. Maybe the Cincinnati area would be nice. Another place to look into. Thanks again.

    You%26#39;re welcome!

I lived in Cincinnati for many years and it should be nice and warm (if not hot!) by early June. I hope you have a great time wherever you go!

    Lily

We had an extended family vacation (over 20 of us!) this summer at Beachwalk Resort in Michigan City, Indiana, and we loved it! There are houses of various sizes for rent in the resort, and renters have use of the complex. There is an outdoor pool; a small, private lake with a beach area for swimming and fishing off a dock; sand volleyball; a tennis court; basketball court; a putting green; and a playground all within the resort. A not-too-long walk leads you to the boardwalk to Sheridan Beach on Lake Michigan. Of course, Michigan City provides you with any restaurants or shopping you might desire, including a large outlet shopping center. There is also Washington Park, which hosts concerts during the summer. Plenty of side trips are available, too, such as the lighthouse museum, Indiana Dunes National Park, fishing charters on Lake Michigan, etc. As you can see, I really enjoyed our week there! Search for Beachwalk Resort and you%26#39;ll find plenty of results for house rentals. The issue of early June could factor in as far as the Lake beach goes, but there are plenty of other activities to enjoy.

I just posted some pictures of Brookville Lake taken at a restaurant at the marina. I didn%26#39;t get the golf course in, but it%26#39;s just to the left of my pictures. The restaurant is at the top of a hill. My view was to the south. From the parking lot you can almost see the same distance to the north. It%26#39;s a beautiful spot on a 16 1/2 mile long lake.

Brown County State Park is near Nashville Indiana, not sure how far that is from Warsaw but it%26#39;s a beautiful park and has family cabins (if they have any available as Oct is VERY popular in that area) It%26#39;s a beautiful area.

    www.browncounty.com may have some suggestions.

    State park Help

Whitewater Memorial State Park is about 3 hours from Warsaw. (The state park is about 1/2 hour south of Richmond.) It%26#39;s on Brookville Res. and has family cabins. I think they have horseback riding and canoe rentals.

It%26#39;s also not far from Metamora, an old canal town that has cute shops and a train. Centerville is also nearby and is on the historic National Road and has a lot of antique stores in historic buildings.

If you decide to go there, feel free to e-mail me and I%26#39;ll give you more specific suggestions.

    Have a great trip!

Thanks everybody! I realized that I went to Brown County right after I clicked send and forgot that I had been there. The day I send this we figure out something, not at a state park, but at a small cabin place in Rockville in Parke County. We are near Turkey Run and Shades State Parks and I heard that Shades has challenging hiking, which means I%26#39;m so there. Thanks for your suggestions though!

  • Indy Hostel?

Anyone know about this place? (is it near downtown safe, basic, etc??

    Indy Hostel

    4903 Winthrop Avenue

    Indianapolis, Indiana 46205

    USA

    (317) 727-1696

    Indy Hostel?

I have never been there so I hope others will give you firsthand information. However, I did find a link to some reviews of the place.

    www.hostelz.com/hostel/29281-Indy-Hostel

I looked at a map, and it really doesn%26#39;t appear to be very close to downtown. Will you have a car? Will you need to use public transportation? What do you plan to do in Indianapolis?

If you will be traveling with a couple of people, at $25/bed, it might be cheaper to get an inexpensive hotel room. If you%26#39;re by yourself, that%26#39;s probably the cheapest thing you%26#39;ll find, and the reviews were good.

In general, hotels right downtown tend to be more expensive than those you%26#39;ll find in the outlying areas.

I%26#39;m sure others will jump in with more detailed information for you soon!

    Indy Hostel?

    Thank you so much.

    I%26#39;ll be on foot, alone.

    (from airport)

    Using public transportation.

I hope to see downtown Indianapolis mostly.

    Zypcio,

    You%26#39;re very welcome!

Here%26#39;s the link so you can check bus routes: http://indygo.net/ Some don%26#39;t run all seven days, and it looked like a couple that were near the hostel don%26#39;t, so be sure to check on that.

The hostel is about 5 1/2 miles north of downtown and all of the attractions in White River State Park. I believe you can rent bikes. The bike path near the hostel might go all the way down to the park. On the map for Indy Greenways it looked like part of the trail to the canal was still in the planning phase, so it might not go all the way down.

Hopefully someone else who has more experience with the trails or the bus system will be able to give you more information soon!

I hope you have a wonderful trip to Indianapolis!

I think I%26#39;ll be up close to 4900 Winthrop today. I%26#39;ll try to drive by and check it out. I see your%26#39;re from Krakow. Where is that?

Went by Indy Hostel today. It looked OK. To the east about one block is the Monon Trail. This is an old railroad track that has been converted into a walk/jog/bike trail. It is closed after dark. To the west 3 blocks is College Avenue. This is where you can catch a bus to take you downtown. There is a bus stop about a block and half north or south from 49th Street. About a mile and half north straight up College Avenue is Broad Ripple. This is a popular night life area . OK walk in the day but a would cab it at night. Depending when you are coming to INDY I could probabaly help with some transportation

    Indyob

    Krakow is in Poland.

Thank you so much for the reconnoitering, it helps plenty. Might be a good place to stay then (bus, etc).

I have been to the Indy Hostel a couple of times. A couple of local rock bands had rented it out to play concerts there. Since I live in Indy, I did not stay the night, but the place looked very nice, especially compared to hostels I have stayed at in Western Europe and South America. It is probably a 15-20 minute drive to the downtown area, so you would need to take a bus. It is close to the Broad Ripple area of the city, which is full of restaurants and bars. You would probably want to take a bus to that area as well, or you could walk there in about 30 minutes at a brisk pace.

  • What is Terre Haute like?

    The famous columnist, Mike Royko once said, ';In Indiana, you can go to Indianapolis and die of boredom; or go to Gary and die of multiple gunshot wounds.';

Where does Terre Haute fall between them?

    :-)

    What is Terre Haute like?

What does a person do in Terre Haute? Is there a tourism industry like in Logan, Ohio?

    What is Terre Haute like?

Actually, of the 3 I%26#39;d put Terre Haute at the bottom of the list. I%26#39;m not saying come to Gary, but the surrounding areas are nice, not to mention being only 30 miles from Chicago. Indy is a smaller city but there%26#39;s still plenty to do. I have friends who go camping near Terre Haute, and I suppose if you%26#39;re just doing a day trip or weekend at the most it would be fine. They have some nice B %26amp; B%26#39;s. But if you%26#39;re looking for more than 2 days, I%26#39;d go with Indy or Northwest Indiana (not Gary). Although parts of Gary such as Miller Beach are beautiful. They%26#39;re trying to turn it around, it just takes time. A friend of mine is a Gary cop, apparently it%26#39;s still the murder capital of the US, but that%26#39;s based per capita. There are a lot less people in Gary than larger cities.

Terre Haute is also known as a smelly city. I%26#39;m not sure what kind of factory it is that causes it, but Terre Haute has a distinct odor to it. When you%26#39;re traveling, you definitely know when you%26#39;ve reached Terre Haute because you can smell it!

You won%26#39;t be bored in Indy. But alot of people around here go to Chicago for the weekend. I live just south of Terre Haute. I go there to shop. I went to school there. And the place that caused that ';bad smell'; just shut down today.

Terre Haute is not a bad place. It has changed some over the years, and there are things to do there. It is a city that has really cleaned its self up and is really starting to attract people to it. If you are looking for something to do for a weekend there, well depending on what you like to do. In the downtown area there are a few museums in the area. You could visit the Swope Art museum, or the clabber girl museum ( I havent been inside personally). There are also a few art galleries in the downtown area. And if you have kids there is a nice children%26#39;s museum. There are also alot of nice restaurants.

Clubs and Bars?? Hotels, too, i guess??

Okay, i never go to clubs and bars, especially downtown. My wife has been bugging me to take her out on the town dancing, clubbing that sort of thing. So I have a birthday in Nov. so if I am going to do it lets go all out. I am looking for some where to start off slow couple beers at one place, couple shots at the next. Build my courage before we hit the dance clubs. We are ealry 20 somethings and would be looking for that sort of crowd. With it being Nov. short walks from here to there would be the best. So what are the best places to go? She (my wife) also mentioned hotels i.e. Hampton Inn, Conrad, Omni, Hilton Gardens, Hyatt. Any suggestions on which would be the best one for location to bars and price? Or any others i didnt mention? Thanks for the help in advance.

Clubs and Bars?? Hotels, too, i guess??

Best bet would be The Hampton. It%26#39;s there on Meridian right in the middle of it all. There are a couple of small bars on Pennsylvania jus south of Washington to get started. At Maryland(?) and Penn there%26#39;s a place directly across from Conceco Fieldhouse which ic good but will be crowded if there is a game. Final destination? It has to be Ike and Jonesy%26#39;s!!! The original dance and fun place when the downtown started to turn around. Be sure to do the ';gator'; or a ';Curley Shuffle';dance, that will assure that your wife will never want to go dancing with you again. It worked for me with my version of The Jed Clampitt Stomp

Clubs and Bars?? Hotels, too, i guess??

There%26#39;s a big difference between the hotels your wife named, Hampton is one end and the Conrad at the other end of the spectrum, all depends on how much you want to spend and what amenities you want in a hotel.

One place to go and it is loads of fun and very popular is the Slippery Noodle Inn. However, it%26#39;s not exactly walkable or close to some of the downtown hot spots.

    I don%26#39;t know if this is your style at all, but I went with a group of friends to a birthday party at the Jazz Kitchen, and we had a lot of fun. It%26#39;s in the Broad Ripple area. Most nights they have live music. The night we went (Thursday) was ';Latin Dance Party.';

We had dinner there before it got very crowded, danced for awhile and then went other places. Like you, I rarely go to clubs and bars, and this was a nice way to kind of ease into the evening.

    http://www.thejazzkitchen.com/

This also looked like it would be a good resource for you:

I hope you have a great birthday!

Well, our last trip we started at Champs and had an appitizer and a tall draft beer. Then we strolled down to Ike %26amp; Jonesys had another beer (we sat at the bar). Always a great thing to do, where locals are friendly to tourists and willing to give great local advice. Its always fun to do a mini pub crawl. One here, One there!!!

When you leave Ike %26amp; Jonesys, ask to have your hand stamped. Then when you return later, you don%26#39;t have to wait in their long outside line, and you won%26#39;t have to pay cover charge, thats my best tip. Because that is the FINAL DESTINATION!!!!! :)

But, when you leave there, you make a short walk to the Slippery Noodle, I suggest the back of bar, thats where the live music starts earliest. We%26#39;ll get there a little early and have a sandwich, get a good table. Thats where you%26#39;ll have the best time, best music. Great friendly crowd. It%26#39;ll make your trip memorable, you%26#39;ll start tapping your toes and your there, Just plain fun!!!

Then afterwards stroll back to Ike %26amp; Jonseys, thats just a short walk, walk past the long line, and show doorman your handstamped and go in and shake your booty!!! Its all fun in Indy, and I recommend staying at Crown Plaza. We got a great 3.5star rate on the Sheraton. You can%26#39;t lose. You want to stay downtown proper, so you both don%26#39;t have to walk long distance back to hotel. Cabs are hard to find late at nite. Your going to have a great time. My husband dances like Elaine, and we have a ball. :)

Enjoy your holiday and don%26#39;t forget LePeeps for breakfast!!!!!!

Agree with Cincy on the bars. And on the hotels.

The Crowne Plaza is very nice. For a real splurge, the Conrad or the Canterbury will really move you up a couple of notches - really luxurious hotels with great service - sometimes you can catch a good rate too ...

Others to consider for a higher end stay: the Omni and the Sheraton (although the Conrad and Canterbury are heads and shoulders above all the rest).

I was down there Friday afternoon picking my daughters up from college, but I didn%26#39;t really pay a whole lot of attention. Here in the Indianapolis area they leaves are very colorful. I will try to pay attention Tuesday when I take them back to college.

    Conseco Fieldfhouse

I%26#39;ve gone a little mad.... and have decided to take my girls to the Hannah Montana concert at the Conseco Fieldhouse in December!

Before I drop a ton of money on any certain seat, can anyone tell me iif the lower level is a good choice for a concert.....is any section better than another? If anyone can give me a couple of choices I would appreciate it. I am driving 3 hours just to get to Indy and I have never been to the Conseco Fieldhouse. PLEASE HELP!

    Conseco Fieldfhouse

It all depends on where the stage is going to be. If I were you, I%26#39;d check concert tix for sale online. Places like ticketmaster.com should have the configuration for the concert seating on their website. Otherwise, here%26#39;s the link for Conseco seating chart.

I like the club level for both shows %26amp; sporting events. The seating chart on ticketmaster should show where the stage will be. Club level or lower near the stage would be good. Unless you are very close (within 20 rows) to the stage, I don%26#39;t think the floor is that great. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Where to go:Madison, Brown, or Parke County for weekend?

We are planning to come to IN for a weekend and wondered about the best place to go. We would probably go early November.

We thought either stay at Clifty Inn and do some hiking and visit the town of Madison or

Visit Parke County and see all the covered bridges or

Visit Brown county and see the shops and park there.

Any suggestions or tips are where to go, where to stay, what to see, where to eat, etc?

Where to go:Madison, Brown, or Parke County for weekend?

They are three great places, and I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;d have a nice time whichever one you%26#39;d choose. It kind of depends on what you%26#39;re in the mood to do.

Parke County in a farming area. It%26#39;s a beautiful place in the fall, and I would love to visit their Maple Festival in the late winter/early spring. Usually the prettiest leaves are off the trees by early November, but this year the foliage is way off, so I have no idea what it will be like the first weekend of November.

    www.coveredbridges.com

The small town of Nashville, Indiana in Brown County is surrounded by wooded hills and reminds me a lot of small towns in the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. It is extremely popular in the fall, but I would think that by early November it wouldn%26#39;t be as crowded, and there is plenty to do besides looking at leaves. In addition to the art galleries, wineries and shops, there%26#39;s the Little Nashville Opry which hosts performers like Josh Turner, Randy Travis, and George Jones. There is also the music park and hall of fame started by Bill Monroe, the ';Father of Bluegrass Music.'; If you want something truly unusual, you can even tour a sock factory!

    http://www.browncounty.com/

    http://www.thelittlenashvilleopry.com/

Madison is a small historic river town. Visit mansions, shop for antiques, buy gourmet candies and watch boats go by on the river. Clifty Falls is also lovely.

    http://www.visitmadison.org/

Because the first weekend in November can be gray, rainy, and frequently cold, I would pick someplace that has a lot of indoor activities that appeal to you just in case.

If I were you, I%26#39;d choose Brown County for this trip for a couple of reasons. First, I%26#39;d save a trip to see the covered bridges for a prettier time of year. They look beautiful against green or gold leaves, but aren%26#39;t as stunning against grayish brown. Second, since you%26#39;d like to hike and see the falls near Madison, I%26#39;d go at a time when there hasn%26#39;t been such a terrible drought. We made that mistake on my very first visit. We hiked five hours to the falls, only to disover that 1) the lady who gave us the information failed to mention the parking lot and stairwell next to the falls and 2) the falls were about 1/3 the size they usually were since there hadn%26#39;t been much rain. Finally, Brown County has a cozy feel that%26#39;s appealing to me even on a dreary day. If it happens to be a gorgeous day, it%26#39;s also a beautiful place to hike.

Whatever you choose, I hope you have a wonderful time in Indiana!

    Lily

Where to go:Madison, Brown, or Parke County for weekend?

I didn%26#39;t even think about the waterfalls not being as nice because of the lack of rain! Thanks for pointing that out.

For a wonderful Brown County (Nashville) Indiana getaway this is a beautiful new privately owned luxury log cabin rental just a few miles from Nashville and Bloomington. It has everything.........Private, secluded, Hot Tub, 2 story stone fireplace, Master Suite w/ fireplace and Jacuzzi, Pool Table etc...too many things to mention but it is really a gorgeous place in a great location for any time of the year. It%26#39;s really neat there in the winter when it%26#39;s covered in snow while yoiu are enjoying a bottle of wine by the fire or in the hot tub! Or laying in bed watching the fire in the Master Suite! Ahhhhh!!

    website is www.adventurewoodlogcabin.com

You%26#39;re welcome! Even though the falls won%26#39;t be as impressive as they usually are, I didn%26#39;t mean to imply that Madison wasn%26#39;t worth visiting. My brother and sister-in-law recently got back from there and they were really impressed with the things they%26#39;ve done to the town in the last few years. They happened to stop on the way back from a short vacation in Tennessee and told me they wished they%26#39;d spent their whole time there!

I checked Mapquest to see where Belleville is, and I noticed they said that the best route to Brown County is on I-70. That actually passes very close to Parke County, so you could very easily make a side trip to Parke County and see some covered bridges on your way to Brown County if you decide to go there.

Have a great trip wherever you decide to go!

    Lily

If you travel after Thanksgiving, starting with that weekend, they start all their Christmas celebrations then. Since a lot of the shops close after Christmas you can get some good bargains between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My friends and I go every fall for a week and have mostly rented from Hill%26#39;s of Brown for the past 12 years, but we have been going there as a girlfriend%26#39;s getaway for the past 20 years. It%26#39;s only 2 hrs. from home in case something happens back in Cincy with our families, which has occured more than once, which is why we always take 2 vehicles!!! That way not all 3 of us have to leave and whoever has to go back home can come back when they can.

Where to eat?? Nashville House, Hobnob Corner, The Ordinary, Hotel Nashville, Brown County Inn (buffet type), there is a good Mexican place (Maldonado%26#39;s) and a new small place on rt.46 before you get into town.

If you pick Nashville have a good time and rent a place that has a fireplace!!!

    Hi Want2travel!

All the posts are great. Our trees are just starting to turn. One or two leave per tree. It all depends on whether the temps start to drop.

Madison is beautiful. We visit in the spring, before it gets to hot and then they have a huge art festival in late September. December is nice for their Holiday home tour.

The post that suggested a side trip to Parke County would work better for you. Once the Covered bridge festival is over (going on right now) you would just be doing alot of driving.

Nashville is perfect for October, November and December. There is a covered bridge in Bean Blossom that you can drive across and another one (double wide) at the entrace to Brown County State Park.

Lodging in Franklin is convenient and cheaper than Nashville. The bed and breakfast is call Ashley-Drake Historic Inn and Gardens. Franklin is conveniently located 25 miles north of Nashville, 13 miles north of Edinburgh Outlet Mall and Exit 76 Antique Mall, 12 miles south of Greenwood Park Mall and 20 miles south of downtown Indianapolis. Franklin also features several antique and specialty stores, tea room, coffee house, fine dining and our Historic Artcraft Theater. November movies are Nov.3 Babe(1995), Nov 9-10 The Great Escape (1963), Nov 16-17 Superman (1978) and for the towns holiday festival Nov 30-Dec 1 A Christmas Story (1983).

Franklin also has the regular city features of an 8 cinema, Bowling, roller skating, fast food restaurants and big box stores.

The b%26amp;b web site is www.AshleyDrakeInn.com

    The theater site is www.HistoricArtcraftTheatre.org

Hope you have a great trip, which ever you choose.

    Kim

My daughters go to college in Hanover near Madison. When we were down there about a month ago , we were told that there was little or no water going over the falls in Clifty park. We have finally gotten some much needed rain since then so things might have changed. One good thing about Madison is we took a small airplane tour of the town. It was $12 a person for a 15 minute ride and the sights were awesome. I highly recommend it if you are in the area and they are still offering it at the airport.

There is another nice destination in Indiana . . . Centerville in eastern Indiana. If you like small historic villages with antiquing, artisan shops, cozy B %26amp; Bs and good eats, Centerville is the place. It is located just off I-70. At the exit is Warm Glow Candle Outlet. This place is a destination in itself! Over 11,000 square feet of candles and accessories. Outside the 30%26#39; illuminated cande facade is beautiful at night.

Centerville has historic architecture you won%26#39;t find anywhere else in Indiana. . . 1830 rowhouses with brick archways. The archways allowed property owners access to the back of their residence. Many of the rowhouses with archways have side porches. Just beautiful!

The Palais Royal restaurant is a great place to eat. It is located in a historic home. Their menu changes daily. They offer steak, fresh seafood, pasta, chicken specialities and more! Their desserts are to die for! Outdoor seating too.

Centerville is a great weekend destination! Check it out at :

    www.lantzhouseinn.com

    www.centervillein.com

Centerville is very nice. I go there to spend an afternoon several times a year, and I often recommend it to people who want to get of the interstate and enjoy a nice little town on historic National Road. It is very small, however, and unless you like to spend even more time in antique stores than I do, I%26#39;m not sure that there would be enough to keep you busy for the entire weekend, esp. for a 10+ hour roundtrip drive. Since you like hiking, it is a relatively short drive from the northern end of Brookville Res. and Whitewater Memorial State Park. Metamora is an old canal town at the southern end of the 16 mile reservoir that has a lot of little shops and a train that you can ride (very slooowly) to a nearby town. A little bit closer to Centerville in the opposite direction is historic Farmland. There%26#39;s a general store, a really nice coffee shop, as well as stores in a converted grain elevator. The downtown is open despite quite a bit of road construction in the area. (There are a few other quaint towns in the area that I can%26#39;t remember the names of right now.)

If you enjoy exploring a lot of cute little historic towns, then definitely head over to the eastern part of Indiana. You%26#39;ll do a bit of driving in between towns, but most of it is through rolling farmland or tree covered hills, so it%26#39;s enjoyable.

If you%26#39;re in the mood to do more hiking, while there is some nice hiking in Whitewater Memorial State Park, I think there is a more extensive trail system in Brown County and near Clifty Falls.

Is this a decent area to stay in?

I just booked the Fairfield Inn on E. 21st Street near Shadeland. Is this a safe area to stay in?

Is this a decent area to stay in?

    Hi MSU Mom,

I found this website for someone else a few weeks ago. You can input the address of the hotels you%26#39;re considering and then get a list of the incidents in the area and see if it feels like a safe area to you.

Is this a decent area to stay in?

I tried it with the info you provided, and I think it needs the actual street number for it to work.

I used the above website and came up with a couple of car thefts and a couple of car break-ins in the last 30 days. When will you be in town? Are you attending any specific event?

It%26#39;s not one of the more attractive areas of the city. But you should be safe there.

The crime rate is a bit higher in the area. I%26#39;m not familiar with that particular Fairfield Inn, and only am comfortable recommending the Marriott at that intersection.

The motels at that exit are all pretty new. You should have no trouble in the immediate area. There is a Bob Evans and just about all the fastfood places you can think of. If you head north on Shadeland there is a T.D.Alibi%26#39;s which is a pretty nice restaurant/bar(about 75th and Shadeland). As of today (Nov 23) I don%26#39;t think you can get on I 70 heading towards downtown because of construction. Not sure when all that is going to be open

We will be staying for just one night next month. We are going to the Bands of America Grand Nationals. We already have a hotel downtown for 2 nights but we just decided to add a night and we couldn%26#39;t get anything reasonable downtown.

    Thanks for the info!

The Bands deal is pretty fun. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy downtown INDY. Have fun!

If the I70 ramp going downtown is closed what%26#39;s a good alternate? Is there a better area for me to stay given that I%26#39;m coming in from the northeast late Thursday and need to be downtown by about 9:30 Friday morning?

If the ramp is closed, go south on Shadeland to Washington Street then go west. Wash. will take you right thru the middle of downtown. I would plan on a 30-45 minute drive. If you leave about 8:00 most of the rush will be over. I%26#39;m not sure of the parking situation downtown being a work day. Maybe someone else will chime in here. I also think that the construction is suppossed to be finished by the second week of Nov so you might not have to worry about it. Heading EAST from downtown the Shadeland exit is open

Since you%26#39;re coming in from the northeast, I assume you%26#39;ll be coming in on I-69. (There is some construction there too, by the way.) Fishers is right by I-69 and that general area has a lot of hotels and stores. It is also an area where I feel pretty safe. (I%26#39;m not as familiar with the other area you mentioned.) It would be more convenient for you late at night, but you would have longer to go during rush hour in the morning, so it just depends on what you want.

    Good luck with everything!

what to do Oct 29-31 2007- This week

    Great starting point:

    http://www.indy.org/

Here are two of my favorite things:

Art Museum, Gardens and Lilly House (Closed Mondays)

    http://www.ima-art.org/

The art museum also has Puck%26#39;s Restaurant which is very nice place to go. It%26#39;s only open for lunch on Tuesday and is closed on Monday. http://www.ima-art.org/connect/pucksmenu

    White River State Park

    http://www.in.gov/whiteriver/index.html

A great view of downtown, several interesting museums, a canal walk, the zoo, White River Gardens--all in one place. The gift shops at the museums also have unique items. (Some attractions are closed on Mondays.)

If I think of other things, I%26#39;ll let you know.

Great place for breakfast or lunch:

It was featured in Gourmet Magazine, I believe.

The restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel is a AAA four diamond restaurant. It%26#39;s perfect if you%26#39;re looking for a formal, romantic atmosphere downtown.

This is a fun place that is a bit north of downtown in the Broad Ripple area.

    ';8 before 8 鈥?Monday%26#39;s

The Jazz Kitchen announces a new line-up of hip, tasty dinner specials priced at only $8 when you dine before 8p, every Monday night. Relax and unwind from a hectic day with The Jazz Kitchen鈥檚 8 before 8 dinner specials and choose from specials like fresh dinner salads, bistro specialties or a juicy burger with a compliment of crispy fries. You can also search for ';restaurants'; in the forum search box. I know that others had great suggestions in previous threads.

    Have a great visit!

    German Restaurant

I don%26#39;t see an event listed at the Rathskeller for Monday.

Indiana%26#39;s Oldest Bar est. 1850. Live Blues 7 nights a week.

Probably the most famousIndy restaurant is St. Elmo%26#39;s.(steakhouse). What would be your idea of fun? Musems? Shopping? Sports? etc?

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is open every day but Christmas. 9-5pm

To expand on my earlier post, for $3 you can do a lap around the Speedway!

There%26#39;s ice skating year-round at the Indiana/World Skating Academy.

I know you%26#39;re looking for ideas for Monday night, but so far I haven%26#39;t found a lot of other ideas for evening entertainment. Do you have a preference for type of activity?

I%26#39;ve listed the links for St Elmo%26#39;s, the restaurant at The Canterbury as well as Palamino, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Dunaway%26#39;s and Morton%26#39;s Steakhouse all of which are in downtown indianapolis.

Another favorite of mine which is on Massachusettes Avenue and close to downtown is Asiago, it%26#39;s excellent as well.
