Planning a vacation from the UK has its hazards. Madison looked a nice place for a stopover, and the Clifty Inn, in a State Park and with river views, seemed ideal.
But looking at satellite image it seems to be a few hundred feet above and behind a power plant! Not my ideal location after all.
Anyone have local knowledge? Is there an alternative decent place, preferably with river views? The Hillside Inn has mixed reviews and the (refurbed?) Riverboat Inn has no reviews.
Visit no until next spring, so no rush.
Clifty Inn - dodgy location?
I know there is a plant near Madison and it%26#39;s been awhile since I%26#39;ve been there, but I don%26#39;t remember noticing it from the Clifty Inn. Maybe all of the trees blocked the view of it or I was distracted by all of the fun we were having. I have only eaten at the inn, so hopefully someone who has spent the night there will be able to tell you more.
I%26#39;m sure you saw that Clifty Inn is ranked number 1 in Madison on TA. I believe Madison was also ranked as a top destination to visit in the Midwest by a very popular U.S. magazine. (If I find the article, I%26#39;ll pass it on.)
I used to go there much more often when I lived within a couple of hours drive of the town (in Cincinnati), but I moved away several years ago and haven%26#39;t gotten back to Madison. My brother and sister-in-law were there recently and thought it was great--even better than it was several years ago.
Some of my favorite memories include hiking in the wooded hills to the waterfall. After the spring rains, the waterfall should be very nice.(FYI: If you don%26#39;t feel like hiking, you can drive there.)
Downtown Madison has a lot of nice shops and there are mansions that you can tour. It gives you an interesting look at what life was like when this was a bustling river town in the 1800%26#39;s.
I%26#39;m not sure if you can take a riverboat ride in Madison, but I do know that Madison is a stop for some of the riverboat tours that travel down the Ohio to the Mississippi.
I would think it would make a very nice stopover for you.
Here%26#39;s an excerpt from one of reviews that I thought might help you:
';The Riverview apartments have a wonderful view of the river, the town of Madison and not quite so nicely part of an electrical power plant. The layout of the Inn is such that the power plant is not visible to guests (except on the Riverview side), but the balconies and overall river view make up for it and we heard no sound coming from the plant at all.
There is a very nice indoor pool with a large jacuzzi. My family really enjoyed it.
Everything about this place is tasteful and beautiful. The exterior of the Inn looks almost institutional with lots of brick and glass. Once inside, you realize that the glass is there to take advantage of the beautiful landscape and the interior is very lodge-like with wood, stone and fireplaces.
We definitely are coming back!';
I hope this helps!
Where else do you plan to go in the U.S.? Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you!

Clifty Inn - dodgy location?
The inn at the Clifty Falls State Park is a great place to stay. The rooms are fairly new. The decor is nature-inspired. The indoor pool is a great size. I have stayed there before and I am staying there again with my family over the Christmas holidays. I love the town of Madison. The shops are fun, even if you are a window shopper. There is something for everyone. In fact, my 15 year old son loves going to Madison.
We just returned from the Clifty Inn %26amp; had a nice time, but the smoke stacks are prominent %26amp; you can hear activities there %26amp; smell smoke when the wind is right. You might look at the Bel Terra hotel in Vevay (about 30 minutes east of Madison.) It%26#39;s associated with a casino, but we have stayed there even though we do not gamble. I believe you can request river view rooms. I must say though, I doubt you can beat the view from Clifty Falls looking over the river %26amp; Madison, Indiana.
Sorry Grumbleweed. Belterra is one word. And they have a website to learn more.
Thanks for the help, looks like Madison is a safe bet, but may hold off booking accomodation for a few weeks. May be some reviews of Riverboat Inn by then.
I%26#39;ll now plan rest of route! (likely Shakertown-Smokies-bottom end Blue Ridge-Hawks Nest).
Good idea to wait a little Grumbleweed. We saw the Riverboat Inn on our way to the Keywest Shrimp House %26amp; it looked good from the outside. It is close to the river %26amp; downtown Madison %26amp; has a nice view, although it does not have the panoramic view you can get from Clifty Falls. But the rooms on the website look nice. If you decide to go with the Clifty Inn, I would recommend booking about 2 months ahead %26amp; request the river view area of the inn.
