I have a long stopover and wonder if there%26#39;s anything near the airport worth venturing out to see...
What's near the airport?
Not near the airport - but there%26#39;s a free shuttle to downtown, which is 10 or 15 minutes away, not much threat of traffic jams every (I live downtown and communted to the airport area for 6 years, and never got stuck in traffic once).
Downtown is very walkable, if it%26#39;s not too cold. Go to Monument Circle, an iconic site in the center of the city. Walk a few blocks north through a couple parks to the War Memorial, or to the west to the Canal area, where there are 4 museums (three of them right next to one another) plus the zoo and a botanical garden.
If you%26#39;re into art, take a cab either from downtown or the airport to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 3 or 4 miles north of downtown. It was redone in 2005, and it%26#39;s more than respectable. If you take a cab to the IMA, you%26#39;ll need to call for a cab back, so get the cab company%26#39;s phone number.
What's near the airport?
If you need a gift for a child waiting on either end of you trip, trust me on this - hit up Mass Ave Toys downtown. You can get the downtown shuttle and walk there, or take a cab. The best toy store ever. 409 Massachusetts Ave (3 door north of the corner of Mass, Alabama and Vermont), 715-9158
Another thing - there are often free midday concerts and such at the Artsgarden, a glass-enclosed space suspended over a downtown intersection. It%26#39;s adjacent to Circle Centre mall in the center of downtown. Check indyarts.org for a schedule. It%26#39;s also a nice place to hang out and people-watch.
Great suggestions! Thank you SO MUCH! !
