My local airport (Philly) is ridiculously slow and overcrowded at the security lines and I find that I really do have to arrive a full 2 hours before my flight just to make it through on time. It%26#39;s mostly because althought every concourse has 4 or 5 screening machines, only 1 or 2 of them are ever open.
I was just wondering - how is the Indianapolis airport for getting through security? I%26#39;ll be flying home on a 9am Sunday flight in July and was looking to sleep as late as possible!
Thanks!
Airport Security
We usually head for the airport 2 hrs before flight time, and have plenty of time. We live about 15 minutes from the airport. With parking, etc. I would say we are actually checking our luggage 1 1/2 hrs before our flight time.
It will take time to get through security, but it%26#39;s usually pretty good. I%26#39;ve never waited more than about 15 minutes at IND to get through, and I fly out of IND approximately 6-8 times per year.
I have observed that, when it does get busy, they seem to open up additional screening lanes.
We have encountered an issue once with NWA, but it was at their counter. They were majorly understaffed, plus they were dealing with passengers that had flight delays due to weather. It took us almost 1 1/2 hrs to get our luggage checked with them. We had to literally run to our gate. After that experience, I will always allow the 2 hr prior arrival time recommended. Sometimes it is needed.
Airport Security
Thanks Lzylitnin! I appreciate it. I%26#39;m a nervous flyer anyway so I guess I%26#39;ll just get there 2 hours before just in case.
I commute through the Indy airport every month, and never have had to wait more than 10 minutes for security - with the exception of Sundays in the summer.
Since the airport is mid-sized, summer weekend travel volume (and holiday travel) tends to back it up. So don%26#39;t cut it too close in July :)
Will do JuliYaYa. And since we%26#39;re headed to NYC right after this I definitely don%26#39;t want to miss my flight!
We usually get checked in %26amp; get through security with no problems in Indy. But be aware that each airline has their own deadline on how close to flight time you can check your bags. Most need bags checked before 30 minutes to flight time, but other require 45 minutes.
We usually give ourselves the 1 1/2 - 2 hours window %26amp; relax once we get there, but it should be nothing like Philly.
I%26#39;ve never has a problem at Indy. The worst was leaving on Sprink Break two years ago on Sat early a.m. It took about an hour to get checked and thru security. Most timesthough less than 15 min. The only delays I would guess that time of year would be 4th of July weekend or the first weekend of August (Brickyard 400 weekend). Other than that on Sunday traffic to the airport will be light and there should be no problem. I think you%26#39;ll find that the Indy airport is pretty low keyed espcially compared to Chicago, NY, and other very large airports. Don%26#39;t be surprised to be able to get to the airport from downtown in less than 15minutes or no more than a half hour from most parts of town
Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it. If you%26#39;ve ever flown out of Philly I think you%26#39;ve probably encountered the nightmare of the security lines there! I';m really looking forward to my first trip to Indianapolis this summer even though it%26#39;s just a quick weekender trip.
