I can answer my own question now, having visited Clifty for a meal and a look round.
First impression is the red brick building looks more like a state correctional institution than a state park lodge. However, the interior was clean, light and spacious, including the dining room, which offered typical food for such an establishment. The rooms looked fine.
Ah! But the chimneys. In fact they tower above the lodge, and cannot be ignored despite judicious tree planting. I don’t know what they emit but I wouldn’t like to be very close for very long.
Madison town really does have some interesting bits, and some serious investment between Main Street and the river could make it really attractive proposition. However, at the moment you risk a broken leg on many of the sidewalks in this area.
But “Prettiest Small Town in the Midwest”? I didn’t realise the Midwest had that little to offer. And “The most beautiful rivertown in America”? Hmmm. But go and judge for yourself, it’s worth a look.

Are they still advertising airplane rides around town? My daughters%26#39; attend collage in the Madison area and for their birthday last year we took an airplane ride above Madison. It was anout $10-12 per person for a 15-20 minute ride which includes flying along the river and over the falls. I recommend it highly if it is still offered.
