Can anyone tell me if there is parking available at/near the Amtrak station in Indianapolis? If so, is it pricey? Safe? I am planning to take the train to DC so will be parked there for several days.
Indy Amtrak Station
The Amtrak station is on South Street (at Illinois St.) on the southern part of downtown. It shares the space with the bus terminal. It offers only a very limited number of short-term parking spaces, nothing long term to leave your car while you are traveling, so you will need to park in one of the downtown garages. There is a lot of construction in the area (it is opposite the under-construction Lucas Oil Stadium) and street access is limited (otherwise you could try street parking). Not sure what an overnight charge is at a garage - probably similar to what you would pay in downtown Louisville, so you might check with one there.

For more information and visual maps of other available parking facilities just google ';Indianapolis Downtown Parking';. You%26#39;ll be able to pull up some great PDF files that show the lots in relation to Union Station. You%26#39;ll also see a site that lets you type in where you want to go and then it will pop up the ones in that area with all the info like what I posted above.
For what it%26#39;s worth - Amtrak was no help whatsoever in helping me with this information. The telephone number provided to me two different times by two different agents was the same and wrong. It was a dedicated fax line to an area code that was not for Indianapolis. They also told me I could park long term at the Crowne Plaza Hotel located at Union Station - also wrong.
While there is construction right in the area, with a little preparation on your part, it should be no problem driving in and parking. Like most Bus/train station areas however, just watch out for yourself as you would anywhere unfamiliar. It is the city and there are a lot of homeless and beggar-types in that location. Especially in the wee hours of morning and at night when the stations (Greyhound/Amtrak share) open.
Happy travels! For what it%26#39;s worth - I love the Indy Amtrak Station. It has charm and is really tiny.
Thanks folks, for the help. We thought we could park in one of the downtown lots--much cheaper than a garage. But it turns out you can%26#39;t park in a lot longer than 24 hours. So we ended up parking in the Pan American garage. Very pricey at 20$ a day! So, be forewarned--if you have a choice, you might want to take the train from one of the small towns outside Indianapolis where I assume parking is cheaper or free.
