Travel conditions Indy to Chicago

I have some friends driving up to my area tonight and wondered if anyone has been through the I-65 area recently?

From the traffic sites, I can see that I-65 is closed north of the 80-94 junction, so that people who want to take the toll road/skyway to Chicago are impacted. My friends, however, need to travel westbound on I-80/94 to hook up with I-294. Is there a giant delay getting on to I-80/94 westbound that would merit an alternate route? They will reach that point about 6:30 pm.

For that matter, I need to tavel to Michigan City tomorrow on 294/80/94. Should I expect huge delays eastbound?

Well, this is probably too late to help you now, but for future reference: I recently drove from Indy to Chicago and avoided the construction area completely. I took I-65 to Rt 30 at Merrillville. Rt 30 takes you into Illinois where you meet up with 394. 394 takes you north and eventually becomes I-94 in downtown Chicago. It was a very easy drive (of course, you have to deal with all of the traffic lights through Merrillville and the other towns along 30), but it sure beat the risk of sitting in construction traffic or trying to follow a detour. Added bonus - you avoid the tolls!

Thaks for the advice. As it turned out, the only problem they ran into was the weather last night. Heavy rain made visibility poor and many people pulled over on to the shoulder.

As for 394, is there an exit to 80-94 westbound? I%26#39;m interested in avoiding the city and using 294.

FWIW, today%26#39;s trip to Michigan City went very smoothly, although those wishing to exit onto I-65 had a long backup.

Yes you can exit 394 to 80/94 west.
