Indy 500 Race Day Travel

If we stay at a downtown hotel race weekend, what can we expect as far as race day traffic? We%26#39;ve been to numerous big events and know what a mes it can be, but is it worth it to pay $200 extra for a package including police escorted motorcoach to the race, when I can get hotel and tickets on my own cheaper.

Many/most of those police escorted motor coaches are for the trip IN to the track. The trip out for most is the same, slow, slogging along trek that everyone else endures.

You may want to make sure you have a full understanding of what the transportation (particularly the escorts) consists of ...

If it%26#39;s a to and from the track escort - it most definitely is worth it.

I have my own super secret way into the track, but some things have to remain secret ... I%26#39;m into the primo lot on the south side of the track in a matter of minutes from downtown Indy (with very quick exit - onto 10th St. - that%26#39;s as much as I%26#39;ll say, ... 10th St. is the fast way out of the track - the trick is getting into a primo lot on 10th St - o.k. - one more hint, it involves your own chutzpah and the police manning the wooden side street blockades along the 10th Street ';escorted traffic only route'; in the morning).

If you leave by 8:oo a.m. you can probably get to the track pretty quick. It%26#39;s a bit early but it%26#39;s easy to kill time before the race, if the weather is good. If you take 10th St into the track you might try getting over to 16th St when you get past Tibbs Ave. When you get past Tibbs look to turn south on Exeter Ave. If you can%26#39;t get past the above mentioned wooden roadblock keep going a little farther. There is a small business there (a crematory) Cut thru that lot and go over a curb. Go back to Exeter. On the corner of 16th and Exeter is O%26#39;brien Floor Covering. Race day parking there is usually $10.00. and it%26#39;s about a half mile to te main gate of the track(obfloors.com) After the race 16th will be one way east back towards town. Take it to Stadium Dr/Indiana Ave (it%26#39;s an angle street) It will take you to the center of downtown. You%26#39;ll be back to your room in 15 minutes. DO PLAN to leave for the race early Sun morn. You%26#39;ll want to be in your seats to see all te festivities and DEFINETLY the start of the race. Will you be in town early for Carb Day Friday and the parade Sat??..........and DAVE, only 12 more days til Opening Day!!!!!
