I have lived in Indianapolis since I was 5 (40 now). I don%26#39;t recall anyone who actually lives here calling the city Indy. I always thought it was funny when I was going to college at Purdue that guys would ask me if I wanted to go on a road trip to Indy with them. I would always give a smart aleck answer like where%26#39;s Indy. My question is does any other locals on this forum call their home ';Indy?';
Silly question
I travel through Indy quite a bit on my way from Chi Town to Cincy.
Silly question
Interesting differences in experience. I%26#39;ve lived here all my life (50 now) and call it Indy all the time. Maybe have been affected by being a racing fan ...
I%26#39;ve lived here in Indianapolis all but 5 of my now 50 years. Our fsmily moved to Milwaukee from 1966 to 1971. When we lived up there people said Indy. At the time I remember my mom saying ';she never ever heard anyone calling Indianapolis ';Indy';.(she has lived 76 of her 81 years in ';Indy';) If you look at past Indianapolis 500 race memomoribilia (sp?)before the mid %26#39;70%26#39;s you probably won%26#39;t find anything that say ';Indy'; 500. It was always Indianapolis 500. Whenever we go on vacation and someone asks where I%26#39;m from I say Indianapolis. Hope that throws some light on that down in ';The Grove';. Hey Dave, when the ask you do you say ';Car-Mel';?
I%26#39;m not sure when I started saying ';Indy'; - it may have been once I started traveling as part of my work.
And YES, I get Car-MELL%26#39; all the time. ... I just roll with it.
Dave
I moved here after college and I%26#39;ve been here 13 years. I say Indy sometimes. Interesting question, though.
I love the fact that the three from ';Indy'; so far who responded have Indy as part of your names!
I grew up outside of Indianapolis and can%26#39;t really remember when I started using it. I think I say Indianapolis more and type Indy often!
Do the locals over there in Ohio say ';Cincy';?
What we need to ask is how the locals in Kentucky pronounce that city down I-65 on the other side of the Ohio river.
VERY good question. My theory: ';Louisville'; and ';gyros'; are two words IMPOSSIBLE to pronounce the way locals do. No matter what comes out of your mouth, the local will find a way to tweak it.
';Low%26#39;-uh-vull';
';Loo%26#39;-uh-vull';
';Loo%26#39;-vull';
';Loo%26#39;-wee-vull';
';Low%26#39;-vull';
';Lowghghvuhhhl';
It simply can%26#39;t be done.
I have a friend who was born and raised in Cincinnati, and he was the first person I ever heard call it Cincy. I lived there for almost 10 years. Some people say it; some people don%26#39;t. ';Cinti'; tends to be used almost exclusively by people who%26#39;ve never lived there.
