My wife, 18yr old son and myself are heading down to Indy for the NHRA Mac Tools US Nationals at the end of August. We%26#39;ll have 1 free day to see the sights. Not a lot of time but we%26#39;ll make the most of it. Plan on going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tour. What else is a must see in Indy? Also, is there a really inique diner or spot to eat that should not be missed. Not looking for a super fancy restaurant but one of those hole-in-the- wall places that serves food to die for. Remember, nothing fancy, just great. Anyway, hope some of you folks from Indy can help me out. Thanks
What are the Indy ';Must See Atttractions'; ?AS for things to see other than the Speedway, I think your best bet is downtown. White River State Park is downtown and contains the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg museum (native american art), the NCAA hall of champions, and the the Indiana State Museum. A walk along the canal is also a must. The park is also right next to the state capitol, the RCA dome (which I believe will still be there in August), and the new Lucas Oil stadium. It%26#39;s also an easy walk to Monument Circle, which is literally the center of downtown. as for local hole-in-the-wall restaurants, I%26#39;m not sure. Hopefully someone else has some suggestions. The first thing that comes to mind is Yats, if you like cajun food. It really is a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is good. They have a location on Massachusetts Ave. (Mass Ave) downtown.
What are the Indy ';Must See Atttractions'; ?I second a trip to check out the white river state park area and downtown. It is all very easy to walk from one area of interest to another. The hole in the wall restaurant I would recommend is Bauzbeax Pizza the best in my opinion. It is located on Mass. ave. Another good restaurant is The rathskellor located on Michigan Ave. It has great German food and great German beers. Nothing better on a hot summer day. Enjoy your visit.
Oh yes, Bazbeaux is great! I don%26#39;t know why I didn%26#39;t think of it. I recommend it too!
Underneath the Circle Monument is a War Museum. Which alot of tourist aren%26#39;t aware of. We didn%26#39;t know the first two times we visited Indy. If its close to your hotel, don%26#39;t miss it. Also, another Museum is under another monument, and its walking distance from Circle monument. Its by LePeeps, go there for breakfast, and if theres a wait, dash to the museum, thats what we did. Fantastic city, enjoy, Indy is great fun. :)
What side of town will you be staying on?
We%26#39;ll be staying in Plainfield which I believe is on the West side of the city.
You should go to Mug %26#39;n%26#39; Bun... at West 10th Street and Lynhurst... an old style drive in... enjoy the true Hoosier (Indiana) classic, the pork tenderloin sandwich! Not too far from Plainfield. If you are staying in Plainfield, Metropolis mall is a popular place or shopping and food.... The Claddaugh (spelling?) has great Irish food.
SLAES has some good suggestions. The Mug N Bun probably is a must. Not too far fro The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It has outdoor seating only or in your car curb service. I prefer their chili dogs and onion rings (one order feeds 2-3). From The Speedway take 16th street west to Lynhurst. Turn south to 10th. Then left about a block. Plainfield is west and convenient to Indianapolis raceway Park. Your probably staying around State Road 267 at the I 70 exit. There is The Coachmen that has great prime rib right there. The Metropolis Mall is about 2-3 miles from there. That%26#39;s where the Irish restaurant is. Not far from Raceway Park in Brownburg is Green Street restauarn and Pub. Great steaks and where a lot of locals go. It%26#39;s west of Raceway Park take SR 136 into Brownsburg, turn right on 267, it%26#39;s in the same strip mall as K Mart. East of Raceway Park is Union Jack%26#39;s (Crawfordsville Rdand I465). They have some of the best pizza around as well as a full dinner menu. There is one of the largest collection of privately owned race helmets in there also and along with paintings fro race artist Ron Burton (he owns the helmets...www.ronburtonart.com)That Monday night there is usually a Drag team or two celebrating a win. Where is Pinawa? We%26#39;re getting ready to host some Canadians from Toronto coming down for he Brickyard 400 email me for more advice odaveob@aol.com One thing to remember though is you must be 21 to get into a lot of places. The ones I named are no problem
Thanks to all of you for your info. Exactly what I was looking for. Pinawa is a little town lacated in south eastern Manitoba, Canada. We are about 1100 miles north west of Indianapolis. Try http://www.pinawa.com/maps.htm to get an idea.
